Dress An Hourglass Figure: Styling Do’s & Don’ts
Only eight percent of women are an hourglass figure, so if you’re an hourglass figure struggling with style and knowing what works for you, then this post is for you. Hopefully, this post can help you learn how to dress your hourglass figure and make you embrace your body shape.
An hourglass figure is defined by a wider bust and hips, with a waist that is typically 25 percent smaller than the bust and hip measurements. The bust and hip measurements are pretty close in an hourglass figure, but they tend to have a full bust and a bottom. This tends to be the curvier body shape, with the waist being narrow and drawn in. An hourglass figure can be any size, from a 0 to a 22. This post will share some helpful tips on how to dress an hourglass figure.

How To Dress An Hourglass Body Shape | Video
Hourglass Figure Celebrities
Look 1: Sofia Vergara
One of the most known and famously dressed hourglass figures is Sofia Vergara. In this first look I’m sharing of hers, she’s wearing a dress that has a lot of extra fabric both on the top and bottom. She has defined her waist with a belt, which is key to styling an hourglass figure, but there’s a lot of extra fabric in this dress and her shape is getting lost.
Look 2: Sofia Vergara
Compare that last look with this where she’s wearing something shorter. It’s above the knee and it’s a fitted silhouette that works beautifully on an hourglass shape. The most flattering silhouette for an hourglass is an outfit that accentuates the waist and is more fitted on the body
Look 3: Sofia Vergara
This is a more casual look of hers. You’ll see she’s in a simple white crew neck T-shirt and jeans, but the T-shirt is not tucked in. One of the things I recommend for every shape is to tuck in your shirt. If you want to accentuate your waist, do either a French tuck or a half tuck.
Look 4: Sofia Vergara
Compare the last look to this look where she’s wearing a v-neck. The v-neck is more flattering for someone who is curvier and fuller in the bust area. It shows more skin and makes it softer on top. She’s done a half tuck here which helps accentuate her waist.
Look 5: Sofia Vergara
For this next look, I don’t think this outfit works for her. The top is billowy and oversized. For an hourglass figure, you want to avoid oversized pieces. There’s so much extra fabric, there’s a ruffle detail, and her waist isn’t defined. It makes her look wider on top than she is.
Look 6: Sofia Vergara
Compared to this outfit, this silhouette works for an hourglass shape. The top is more streamlined, so you can see her body shape, and her waist is accentuated. The jeans look similar to the ones in the last look, but this look feels different with this top. There are no excess ruffles, it’s streamlined and tailored to her body, and that works for this body shape.
Look 1: Cristina Hendricks
The next famous hourglass shape is Christina Hendricks. In this first look, she’s wearing things that are tailored and fitted to her body, which works. You can see her waist even though her shirt isn’t tucked in because the top is tailored to her body.
The one thing I would change is the pockets in the chest area. If you are busty, pockets in the chest area add extra bulk. Here the pockets go above her bust line, so they look misplaced. Pockets on the chest are great if you’re someone that’s a pear shape, or smaller on top and you’re looking to add more width on your top hald. For an hourglass figure, I would skip pockets on the bust area.
Look 2: Christina Hendricks
In this next look, if she had tucked this top in to define her waist, it would have worked on her hourglass figure. She chose to wear something that’s a crew neck and also more oversized on top. The way it’s styled here, I don’t think an oversized top is the most flattering option for her.
Look 3: Cristina Hendricks
For this next look, she’s wearing a fitted structured knit on top. Her top is a knit which helps add softness to this look while defining her waist. Even though she’s wearing a slim jean, I feel like this type of top works best for her. It’s simple, and streamlined. If you’re an hourglass shape, look for simple streamlined silhouettes, soft fabrics, and clothes that fit your body. Pieces that fall naturally on your body are going to work the best.
Look 4: Cristina Hendricks
This beautiful red dress is a perfect example of how to dress an hourglass figure. This dress is fitted, tailored to her body, and draws in her waist. You can see her collarbone so there’s softness in the top area. The fabric choice lays nicely on her body. It has structure, and the dress comes above the knee so you can see her legs. In my opinion, this silhouette is simple and classic and works great for an hourglass shape.
Look 1: Scarlett Johansson
The next hourglass figure celebrity is Scarlett Johansson. This is the perfect casual look for an hourglass figure. Her waist is defined by the tie on her button-down shirt. In this look, she has a casual feminine vibe. There are no pockets in the chest area, and her sleeves are rolled up which creates a simple streamlined silhouette.
Look 2: Scarlett Johansson
This red carpet look works beautifully for an hourglass figure. In this look, her waist is defined by a black band. Another way you can define your waist is by adding a belt. This dress is fitted on top and you can see her arms. It fits her body’s silhouette, there’s no extra fabric in the hip area, and it flows down naturally.
Look 1: Kim Kardashian
The next hourglass celebrity is Kim Kardashian. Some say she leans more towards a pear, and she is probably somewhere between the two. In this first look, she’s wearing a super oversized sweatshirt which isn’t going to be the most flattering for this body type because it makes her look wider than she is.
Look 2: Kim Kardashian
Comparing it to this look, this works great on an hourglass body shape. Her waist is defined in this outfit, everything is streamlined, and the fabric choices are soft. She’s wearing a crop top which shows skin and defines her waist.
Look 3: Kim Kardashian
In this last look, because she veers towards more of an hourglass pear shape, you’ll see here having the structure in the shoulder area helps widen this area to balance the proportion of her hips. She’s still bringing in her waist while having a curvy bottom. This gives her that hourglass figure more than an hourglass pear because she’s widening her top half. Someone with an inverted triangle shape is naturally wider on their top half because of their shoulders.
One of the biggest mistakes an hourglass figure can make is wearing boxy or oversized tops that hide their waistline. An hourglass figure benefits from soft fabrics and from looks that follow the silhouette of the body. Avoid stiff fabrics, especially heavy-weight cotton button-downs, instead look for softer fabrics such as silks, knits, or cotton. Avoid ruffles, pleats, or extra fabric anywhere on the body. Look for simple streamlined silhouettes.
