Someone who is into vintage style typically loves looking at vintage and thrift stores to find pieces from a different time. A vintage fashion style will enjoy different colors, fabric choices, and clothing styles. Your style also has to do with the way pieces are put together to create outfits. Someone with a vintage style will be interested in one-of-a-kind secondhand pieces that you can’t find anywhere else. Shopping is like a treasure hunt which is something I love about this style type!
Your style will likely change as you go through different periods in your life. Most of us will resonate with several style types.

Vintage Fashion Style
Look 1: Alexa Chung
A celebrity that embodies a vintage fashion style is Alexa Chung. She’s a master at styling pieces and putting looks together that have this vintage vibe. In this first look, she’s wearing a faux fur blue jacket. This blue color feels like a ’60s or ’70s hue. The shape of the jacket is also boxier. The collar style also looks like it’s from a different period rather than a modern-day collar.
Although she’s wearing a modern denim jean, it’s the way she’s put this whole outfit together in addition to her choice of shoes that makes it a vintage style.
Look 2: Alexa Chung
Here, Alexa Chung is wearing her version of a white button-down shirt. The style of this shirt feels vintage because the cuffs are fitted but the sleeve is billowy. It also has pleats in the front which is reminiscent of a different period. These details make it specific to a vintage style. Again, while her jeans can be very modern, she chose this white button-down shirt, which makes it feel and look more vintage.
Look 3: Alexa Chung
In this next look, she’s wearing a collared shirt underneath a sweater. This is something that we’ve seen in the preppy style type. However, the difference in this look is the style of her collar. The large size is more reminiscent of a different time. Also, the shade of green is not the modern-day green we tend to see, but it feels more from another period. The pink sweater on top also makes the color combination feel vintage.
Her choice of shoes here can be modern, but they are in a dark brown color that we don’t see a lot today. We tend to see more tans, nudes, or grays.
Look 4: Alexa Chung
In this next look, she’s wearing this beautiful feminine yellow dress that can work in a few of these different style types, but it’s the way she’s styling it that makes it a vintage style. She’s wearing it with a navy jacket that has butterfly appliques on it. Appliques are not something you see often. Her black boots also feel vintage. It’s subtle details and how pieces are styled that make them a different style type.
Look 5: Alexa Chung
In this next look, she’s wearing a camel-colored suede trench coat. Again while this piece on its own can work for different style types, she chose to wear it with a dark blue wash denim skirt to give it more of a vintage feel. She’s wearing a striped top which can feel minimal or preppy, but the way she’s styled it with a pair of pointy black boots feels vintage-inspired.
Look 6: Alexa Chung
In this last look of Alexa Chung’s, I wanted to show you how she styles a black leather moto jacket. We’ve seen this jacket across different style types, but it’s about the details of each piece and the way they’re styled. She’s wearing her leather moto jacket with a pair of overalls and Chuck Taylors. She styled it in a vintage way.
Start to pay attention to the pieces in your closet. They will inform you a lot about your style, but also look at how you choose to style things. That’s a big indicator of what your style is. Knowing your style is helpful when you’re making new purchases to add to your wardrobe. If you know your personal style you can decide whether or not to bring a new piece into your closet.
Look 1: Emma Roberts
Another celebrity with vintage style is Emma Roberts. In this first look, she has a simple white tank and a pair of modern straight-leg denim jeans. While those two pieces on their own can work for a variety of different style types, she’s wearing them with a tan leather jacket with studs and vintage shoes. Shoes can change the whole look of an outfit. She’s wearing a mule or a slide with a block heel with a pointy toe which feels vintage.
Look 2: Emma Roberts
In this next look, she’s wearing a black button-up shirt which can translate to many different style types. On its own, it doesn’t feel vintage. She’s wearing high-waisted jeans with the shirt tucked in, but what makes this look feel vintage is her shoes. She’s pulling this whole outfit together with a pair of red suede closed-toe shoes. They have a block heel with a metal embellishment and feel like you could have found them in a vintage store.
Look 3: Emma Roberts
In this next look, she’s wearing this feminine blouse with ruffles on the sleeves. The colors are soft which would fit more into a feminine or romantic style type, but she’s wearing high-waisted wide-leg jeans. It’s a jean style we saw a lot in the 70s. She’s also styled this look with a pair of metallic loafers from a different period. The shape of this bag is also something we’ve seen in the past. The way she’s styling these pieces together makes this look feel vintage.
Look 4: Emma Roberts
In this next look, her jacket is a brown suede with studs on the pockets. The pockets are wider and boxier which is vintage. She’s wearing a ringer graphic tee underneath with a different-colored collar. Her choice of shoes completes the look. They’re a metallic ballet flat. Again the style of this shoe feels like it was from a different period.
Look 5: Emma Roberts
The last look Emma Roberts is wearing is this cropped tee with denim. The ringer tee feels like it’s from the 70s. Her style of jeans were also popular in the 60s and 70s. She completes this outfit with a pair of brogues that are more androgynous. They feel more masculine, but again it’s the way she’s pulling the look together. For example, you won’t see someone with an androgynous style wearing a crop tee from the 70s.
Look 1: Diane Krueger
Another celebrity whose style feels very vintage-inspired is Diane Krueger. In this first look, she’s wearing a billowy top, and because of the color, pattern, and style of this shirt, it feels like something she found in a vintage shop. She styled this top with vintage high-waisted button-fly jeans with a wider leg. Her platform shoes complete this look and make it feel vintage.
Look 2: Diane Krueger
In this last look, she’s wearing white sunglasses with vintage-shaped rims. Another detail of the dress that makes it feel vintage is the collar. We won’t tend to see this in a modern-day dress. She’s also wearing a pair of high-top sneakers to complete this outfit.
