7 Personal Stylist Tips To Elevate Your Style
1. Make sure your clothes are practical for your life.
Make sure everything in your wardrobe is practical for your lifestyle. You want to make sure you have what you need for your everyday life. An easy example of this is let’s say you’re a stay-at-home mom with little kids. You don’t want to have a wardrobe full of silky dresses or blouses that you need to dry clean. Instead, you need something that’s casual and that you can throw in the wash. Clothes that you’re not going to freak out about if something happens to them. Another easy way to understand whether your clothes are practical for your lifestyle is if you live in a really cold climate it doesn’t make sense for your wardrobe to consist of mostly tank tops and shorts. You would want to focus more on warm-weather essentials.
2. Elevate your basics.
If you’ve been following me for a while or watched any of my videos you’ve probably heard this before but it is so important to elevate your basics. You want to make sure that the things in your wardrobe that you’re wearing regularly easily mix and match, and are good quality. You don’t need to replace them every year. I’m a big believer in quality over quantity when it comes to your wardrobe. I feel that you will have more options for getting dressed with fewer high-quality basics and pieces in your wardrobe that easily mix and match.
You can grab my free guide to “The Best Clothing Brands To Shop For Closet Essentials“. This gives you my favorite go-to brands at both budget-friendly and high-end price points for all your elevated basics.
3. Take care of your clothes.
According to Fashion Week Online, “Expressing your personal fashion style isn’t about what you own but rather what you do with what you own… To ensure that your clothes will always look fashionable and pristine every time you wear them, you must know how to take care of them”.
Taking care of your clothing is so easy and will save you time and money long-term. Make sure to dry clean those items that need to be dry cleaned. You don’t need to have them dry cleaned every time you wear them but every third or fourth time. I also recommend getting laundry mesh bags. I even put my elevated basic t-shirts in mesh bags. I’ll wash them with gentle detergent on the gentle cycle and then hang them to dry on a clothing rack. When you take care of your clothes they last so much longer. Another way to take care of your clothes is to use a steamer. And don’t forget about the importance of a good tailor. Even small alterations like lifting a hem on a pair of jeans or taking in a blouse can completely bring new life to a piece.
4. Do a closet edit several times a year.
It’s the start of a new year and a great time to reassess what’s hanging in your closet. Go through each piece and make sure everything that’s hanging in your closet is something that you wear, that you love wearing, that you feel great in, and that you know how to style. You also want to make sure everything in your closet is visible and accessible. InStyle writes, “Clothes need breathing room! You should be able to see every item without rummaging”. Avoid “shoving” things in the back of your closet and stuffing your drawers so that you forget what you have. Limit how many sweaters you stack on a shelf. I recommend no more than 4.
Focus on only having pieces in your closet that you love and that you know how to wear and that you feel great in. Another tip I like to tell my clients is that if you have an item that you love but don’t know how to style, or if you’re looking for new ways to style it, Pinterest is a great way to get new ideas. Look for someone whose style you admire but who also has a similar body type and coloring to you. See how they style a piece for a fresh take.

5. Have a Capsule Wardrobe.
Have the foundation of your wardrobe otherwise known as a capsule wardrobe. If you’re not familiar with a capsule wardrobe or you’re not sure where to start, I’ve written this article that goes through what it is and why it’s great to have. It also offers pieces that I recommend to fill in those gaps in your closet at every price point. In general, a capsule wardrobe is made up of the foundational pieces in your wardrobe. They’re the items that easily mix and match with each other. They are elevated basics in solid neutral colors. A capsule wardrobe builds a foundation to never have to deal with stress when you’re getting dressed because everything you need no matter what the occasion is already in your closet.

6. Avoid Fast Fashion.
Stop spending your money on fast fashion. If this is a term you haven’t heard before, fast fashion is basically low-quality pieces at low cost. Fast fashion focuses more on trends and producing mass quantities. The items typically fall apart relatively quickly and then you throw them away. It’s basically like throwing your money away. You want to switch your mindset to more of quality over quantity. It’s not going to be helpful if you have drawers full of clothes or if your closet is stuffed. Unless you love every single piece and it’s of great quality, it’s actually not going to be easier for you to get dressed.
So I highly recommend avoiding fast fashion. It’s also not great for the environment because it’s just that consumption mentality of getting more. When the clothes fall apart or the trends end, these clothes still have to go somewhere and there’s not really anywhere for them to go except landfills. According to fashion industry statistics, “57% of all discarded clothes eventually make their way to a landfill”.
I’ve walked into numerous closets where people have so many clothes and pieces of fast fashion. They still feel like they have a hard time getting dressed. They’re not wearing 70% of those items and of the other 30% maybe they feel great in 10%. If you want to elevate your style, I recommend that you focus on getting good-quality pieces and having less. Because less, in this case, is really more.
7. Follow the 7-second rule.
The seven-second rule applies when you’re out shopping or if you’ve done some online shopping and you’re trying items on. It’s the first 7 seconds when you put an item on your body. In those first seven seconds, you know whether or not you love that item. Try to avoid anyone else’s opinions in those seven seconds and just really take in how you feel in that item. Those first seven seconds will tell you whether or not you feel great in an item. If you don’t love it in those first seven seconds, you shouldn’t have to convince yourself whether or not this is a great piece to add to your wardrobe.
Sometimes if we’re missing things in our wardrobe or we feel like we have a hard time getting dressed we feel like having more clothes will help us get dressed. But in reality, it doesn’t matter if we have more pieces if they’re items we don’t feel great in.
