8 Tips To Travel In Style
Tip #1: Use A Standing Rack
When packing for a trip, think about where you’re going and what you’ll be doing. A helpful way to start selecting pieces from your wardrobe is by using a standing rack. It lets you easily pull items from your closet and create outfits. Having a separate rack helps you re-evaluate your clothes, especially if you have a lot of them or limited closet space. It’s a great tool for organizing and styling looks for your vacation.
Tip #2: Bring Layers
When packing, it’s important to think about layers. By layers, I mean outer layers, over layers, and base layers. Outer or over layers include items like leather jackets, denim jackets, coats, cardigans, or dusters. These are pieces you wear over a top or base layer. Base layers are versatile items like tank tops, t-shirts, or fitted tops that you can wear on their own or under other pieces.
Packing base and outer layers is essential, especially when the weather is unpredictable. Layers not only help you adapt to changing weather but also allow you to create multiple outfits. For example, wearing a leather jacket over a dress creates a different look than pairing the dress with a cardigan or wearing it on its own. This strategy is especially useful when you’re packing light and only bringing a carry-on, as layers help maximize outfit options.
Tip #3: Have Stylish Luggage
Another way to elevate your travel style is by choosing stylish luggage. I prefer traveling with only a carry-on for the convenience of having my items with me at all times and avoiding the risk of lost luggage.
Tip #4: Elevated Bag
I recommend bringing an elevated bag that works for both daytime and evening looks. Ideally, it should complement casual outfits during the day and add polish to evening looks. I prefer a crossbody style for hands-free convenience, especially when sightseeing, shopping, or visiting museums. That way, I don’t have to worry about setting my bag down or remembering to pick it up while distracted by my surroundings. Having a versatile, stylish bag that you love and can use from day to night is a must for travel.
Tip #5: Avoid Packing Only For Your “Fantasy Self”
When packing, it’s tempting to bring statement pieces or outfits that reflect your “fantasy self”. The version of you that might only exist as an idealized version of yourself. While it’s fun to experiment with those items, you don’t want to fill your suitcase with things you likely won’t wear. Prioritize pieces that reflect your real, everyday style. Items that are comfortable and practical for your lifestyle, especially if you’re traveling with kids. Stick to items that fit who you are today, and you’ll feel more at ease on your trip.
Tip #6: Outerwear
If you’re traveling somewhere with cooler evenings or colder weather, be sure to pack outerwear, like a leather jacket, denim jacket, or wool coat if it’s really cold. This one piece can easily pull together a simple look. Whether you’re wearing jeans, chic sneakers, or a t-shirt, adding the right jacket can instantly elevate your outfit.
When choosing outerwear for a colder destination, remember that you’ll likely wear it often, so make sure it complements the rest of your wardrobe. Pick a color you love. One that pairs well with the other colors or patterns you’re bringing, and something that feels comfortable yet stylish. This way, your outerwear not only keeps you warm but also adds a polished touch to your travel style.
Tip #7: Accessories
Don’t forget to bring a chic pair of sunglasses. They’re an easy accessory that instantly elevates your look. Plus, sunglasses are practical, whether it’s sunny or overcast. I often wear mine even on cloudy days.
In addition to sunglasses, consider bringing a few pieces of jewelry. I wear all my jewelry on the plane to keep it safe and accessible. Since my jewelry is simple and minimal, I can layer my earrings, necklaces, and bracelets and wear everything together. These small accessories, which take up little space, or can be worn during travel, are an effortless way to add something special to your outfits.
Tip #8: Shoes
When packing for a trip where you’ll be doing a lot of sightseeing or walking, make sure to bring a pair of comfortable yet stylish shoes. Ideally, you want shoes that not only keep your feet comfortable but also pull your outfit together. For me, chic trainers are a must-have. I love pairing them with skirts, jeans, or dresses, and they’re comfortable enough to wear all day while exploring new places.
If sneakers aren’t your style, consider sandals if you’re traveling somewhere warm. Look for a pair that’s both comfortable and stylish to elevate your look. If you’re headed somewhere cold, boots are a great option. Whether you choose ankle boots or tall boots, prioritize comfort. A stylish flat boot can still add polish and elevate your travel outfits.
