Can You Look Put Together and Feel Comfortable?

look put together, Online personal stylist

As I’ve gotten older, I still want to look put together, but I also want my wardrobe to work for my lifestyle, be chic and comfortable. Many of my styling clients are women in their late 30s and 40s who are busy moms. They need to feel comfortable, but they also want to look put together and feel stylish.

Being comfortable has become one of the top criteria for what’s important to them when it comes to building their wardrobe. Your lifestyle and body may have changed as you’ve moved into later stages of life, and maybe you want comfort, but you still want to look chic in your clothes. Is it possible to be both?

Can You Look Put Together and Feel Comfortable?

1. Honest Declutter

The first thing I recommend is an honest declutter. If you haven’t edited your closet in a while, go through your wardrobe and take a good look at what you’re wearing and what you’re not. Try to identify what makes you reach for certain pieces. If you’re constantly on the go, juggling young kids, or going from walking the dog to the office, you probably need pieces that feel easy, effortless, and comfortable.

Now, when you declutter, I don’t think you have to get rid of everything you haven’t worn since having kids or going through a life transition. For example, I still keep my heels. I used to wear them all the time, but I’m not ready to let them go. I love them, I bought them intentionally, they hold meaning for me, and I enjoy seeing them displayed in my closet. That’s a good example of something I’m keeping, even though I don’t currently reach for them.

An honest declutter also means looking at what no longer works for your current life. If you’re not wearing it and it doesn’t make you feel good, it’s okay to pause. You don’t have to let go right away; you can store pieces away and reassess in a year or two. But the key is to ask yourself: “Do these clothes reflect who I am now, not who I was 10 years ago?”

Chances are, those two versions of you are different. Building a wardrobe that reflects your current body, lifestyle, and preferences is what’s going to help you curate a closet full of pieces you’ll wear and feel great in.

2. Focus On Fabrics

style secrets, Personal styling

My next tip is to focus on the fabrics of the items you bring into your closet. When you’re adding new pieces, pay attention to what they’re made of. If you’re shopping in person, feel the fabric and see how it drapes. If you’re shopping online, check the product description to understand the material. Look for fabrics that are breathable, soft, and comfortable because you’re far more likely to reach for pieces that feel good on your skin.

In general, natural fabrics like cotton, linen, silk, cashmere, and wool tend to be more breathable and wearable. Try to avoid clingy or synthetic materials like polyester, especially if they don’t allow your skin to breathe. As we get older, comfort becomes more important for many of us, so choosing fabrics that feel soft, light, and easy to wear can make a big difference in how often you reach for a piece.

3. Stylish But Realistic Footwear

My next tip is to look for shoes that are both stylish and comfortable. Shoes that are realistic for your lifestyle. Like I mentioned earlier, I used to wear a lot of heels. But now, in this stage of my life, putting on a pair of heels doesn’t feel appealing at all. I’d much rather reach for a pair of shoes I can wear all day.

Comfort is key, but I also try not to swing too far in the other direction, where I’m just throwing on athletic sneakers or UGGs all the time. While those shoes may be comfortable, they don’t always make me feel stylish or put together. Shoes can completely shift the feel of an outfit, so finding ones that are both intentional and wearable is important. The right pair of shoes can pull your whole look together and help you feel comfortable, modern, and chic all at once.

4. Choose Your Layers

My next tip is to pay attention to your layers: coats, jackets, blazers, and cardigans. These are the pieces you wear over your base layers, and they can completely change the look and feel of an outfit with little effort. Whether you love wearing a tailored wool coat or a structured jacket, these layering pieces instantly make even the simplest outfit feel more put together.

One of my favorite outfit formulas is pairing a classic wool coat with a t-shirt, jeans, and chic sneakers. It’s comfortable but looks polished and intentional. Having a few well-chosen, structured layers can elevate your everyday looks and give your casual outfits a chic finish. So pay attention to those key layering pieces. They’re small wardrobe additions that make a big impact.

5. Elevated Basics

The next tip is to invest in high-quality basics. High-quality basics are your t-shirts, jeans, and other everyday pieces that you wear often. These are the items that need to be both comfortable and polished. I’ve found that when you invest in better-quality basics, it elevates the overall look of your outfit. A well-fitting pair of jeans styled with an elevated tee can look so much more chic and intentional than throwing on any old pair of jeans and a basic t-shirt.

High-quality pieces tend to have better fits, hold their shape longer, and maintain their color better over time, even after repeated washing. That means they’ll last longer and continue to look great. What I’ve also found is that when you have high-quality basics that feel good on your body and fit well, you’ll want to wear them more. They make getting dressed easier and help you feel confident, comfortable, and put together.

6. Have Fun With Accessories

Another simple way to be both stylish and comfortable is to pay attention to your accessories. Look for pieces that are high quality, reflect your personal style, and help complete an outfit. Jewelry is easy to wear and can instantly elevate your look with very little effort. The same goes for bags. A well-chosen bag can pull your outfit together and make even the simplest look feel intentional. Having a bag you love and feel great carrying can make a big difference.

As we move through different phases of life, our style, bodies, preferences, and lifestyles all change. That’s why it’s important to curate a wardrobe that still feels like you AND feels comfortable, so you’ll want to wear the pieces in your closet. Otherwise, you’ll end up with a closet full of things that look great on the hanger but never get worn.

Use some of these simple tips to create a wardrobe that’s both stylish and comfortable, because yes, you can have both. It only takes a few intentional tweaks to make the pieces you’re wearing work for your current life and body.
