9 Questions To Ask To Find Your Style
9 Questions To Ask To Find Your Style
1. What pieces in your closet do you wear regularly?
Look through your closet and find those items that you always put on wherever you’re going. They’re your go-to top, your go-to jeans, your go-to dress, whatever it may be write those items down. Once you made a list of the items that you regularly wear from your closet, write down why these items are the ones you reach for most often.
2. Which pieces in your closet have you not worn?
Maybe there are items that still have tags on them or pieces that have been there for a year and you haven’t worn. Write those items down. After you make that list, answer why next to each item.

3. What do you never reach for in your closet?
These items could be the ones you think you should wear, that you want to wear but you don’t know how to style. Maybe they’re items that aren’t appropriate for the weather, or where you’re going. They could have a pattern that you’re not sure about. Whatever those pieces may be, list the items that you never reach. And then think about the why for each one.
4. Do you have a go-to outfit or uniform?
When I say uniform, think of what you put on that you know you can wear no matter where you’re going. It’s comfortable and you feel confident in it. This outfit is like a uniform in the sense that you may have several of these. I know people that wear a white button-down shirt and black dress pants as their “daily uniform”. They have multiple white shirts and black dress pants. It doesn’t have to be that much of a uniform but think of something that is your go-to outfit.
On a day-to-day basis, mine is an elevated t-shirt, jeans, and my golden goose sneakers. That’s my go-to. It’s a look I feel confident in. I can walk around and do whatever I need to comfortably. What is your go-to outfit? Looks that you gravitate towards. That you can always put on and feel great in.
5. What pieces are missing from your wardrobe?
Are there items that should go on a shopping list? What pieces do you need to get dressed easily each day? It could be something like a nude sandal or an ankle boot in black. Think of the items that should go on a shopping list when you have a wardrobe budget and you’re ready to buy something. These are the items that you should prioritize. The ones that you need to put looks together every day.
This question goes along with having a capsule wardrobe. In my opinion, a capsule wardrobe is made up of the pieces I’ve found that build the foundation for any wardrobe. When I work with styling clients, these are the pieces that I make sure they have in their wardrobe because these items will help them easily get dressed. Whatever they are missing from this capsule wardrobe, goes on their shopping list. If you don’t know what you should put on your shopping list or what items you’re missing in your closet, I recommend checking it out.
6. Is it easy to get dressed every day?
Is it easy to get dressed for work? What about when you’re meeting friends or going out? Do you have an easy time getting dressed for the weekend?
7. What do you absolutely love in your closet?
It could be a shoe, a bag, or a shirt. What do you absolutely love in your closet and would be sad if anything happened to? When you put it on, you always feel great.
8. Do you have all the basic wardrobe essentials?
This question goes back to the idea of a capsule wardrobe. Do you have your foundational pieces? The items you need to help you get dressed every day. If you’re not sure what those pieces are but when you stand in front of your closet you feel like you have nothing to wear, check out my capsule wardrobe checklist. It will help point you in the right direction.
9. How do you feel when looking at your closet?
When you’re standing next to your closet or standing in your closet, what’s the feeling that comes up? Is it dread, anxiety, excitement, happiness, or some combination of these? This might be the most important question to ask yourself because how you feel looking at your closet will say a lot about how you feel about getting dressed every day. If the feeling that you wrote down is one that you want to change, check out all my other How To Style videos. I offer a lot of fashion and style tips. You can also look to work with a Personal Stylist or a trusted friend whose style inspires you.
In Conclusion:
Your closet should be a place where you feel good. It shouldn’t feel like a place of dread whenever you have somewhere to go. It shouldn’t be a thought that you don’t have something to wear so you don’t go out, or you feel dread about it. That’s not a great way to be in your life. Your closet can be a place that you love with the right tools.
So even though your wardrobe might be one small piece of your life, it is something that affects how you feel about yourself and how you feel in the world. It can determine how you engage in the world. Make sure to take the time to really go through these questions and be honest with yourself. Ask yourself the hard questions about your closet and your wardrobe so that you can move forward to create a closet that you love.
