12 Tips To Look Chic & Stay Warm In The Cold
1. Invest In Your Outerwear
When it’s cold outside we tend to bundle up to be warm. Your outerwear is the first thing that people are going to see. It’s what you’re wearing over your outfit and what you’ll be in anytime you’re outdoors. You will get the most use out of a solid color neutral coat in camel, gray, cream, black, or blush. Those colors are very versatile and you can wear them pretty much with anything.
Another tip for your winter outerwear is to make sure your coats are long. I like to keep mine just above the knee. That feels like the perfect length especially if you want to wear a dress in winter. A coat that hits below mid-thigh will keep most of you warm. Also, make sure your coat has pockets to keep your hands extra warm. The last thing to look for in your outerwear is a coat that is lined.
2. Find A Well-Made Pair Of Boots
To get the most out of your boots for the winter look for a pair that is waterproof and made of leather or suede. I also recommend finding a pair that is flat or has a relatively low block heel. So that on those colder days if there’s snow or ice on the ground and you have a bit of way to walk, they’re comfortable.
Personally, I love the over-the-knee boots. Not only are they stylish, but they add an extra layer of warmth to your legs. They’re also great to wear with dresses in winter. If over-the-knee boots aren’t your style I recommend wearing a tall boot in the winter so it comes just below the knee. That way it will give you as much warmth as possible for your legs.
3. Wear Sunglasses
Sunglasses are one of the easiest all-year-round statement pieces. Even if it’s gray outside I recommend putting on a pair of sunglasses. They can really help complete and elevate your look.
4. Invest In Chunky Knits
A chunky knit sweater just feels like a blanket wrapped around you. It is the ultimate winter wardrobe staple when you invest in classic styles that are neutral colors. Wear them with jeans, leggings, or skirts to stay warm in winter. Look for ones that hit at the hip to cover your midriff.
5. Opaque Tights
When you want to wear dresses in winter, don’t forget your opaque tights. I like having black, gray, and winter white tights and will also do navy. Opaque tights are great to add an extra layer on extra cold days. Wear them underneath dress pants, jeans, or leggings for that extra layer of warmth.
6. Wear A Knit Dress
The next way I like to look stylish even on those cold days is by wearing a sweater dress. I like to have one that is a turtleneck to help keep your neck warm. Look for classic styles in solid neutral colors and you’ll wear them for years. Wear them with opaque tights and over-the-knee boots for an easy way to look put together and stylish even when it’s cold outside.
7. Buy A Classic Neutral Scarf
I recommend investing in a classic, neutral scarf that you can wrap around a few times. Look for one that is extra long. A chic scarf can easily elevate your look and keep you warm and cozy.
8. Add Faux Leather Leggings To Your Wardrobe
Having a pair of leather or faux leather leggings in your closet is key in winter. The fabric is thicker than your standard legging. Style them with a long chunky sweater and over-the-knee boots for an easy way to elevate a look and stay warm.
9. Thermals
Get some thermals. When I used to live on the east coast I had a collection of thermals that I would wear under my jeans, dresses, and sweaters for that extra layer. Thermals also help regulate your body temperature and keep you warm but help you from getting overheated. So you can still wear all your favorite outfits with the thermals underneath.
10. Become An Expert At Layering
Get really good at layering. It can make your wardrobe appear so much bigger by giving you more options for styling looks. With just a few good layering pieces like cardigans or knit jackets, you can make so many versatile looks.
Layering is the key to weather all year round. Having a cardigan or jacket you can throw on or take off is a must-have clothing staple in every woman’s closet. I also like to layer cardigans over knit dresses. A few classic layering pieces in neutral colors are key to staying warm.
11. Cotton Turtlenecks
Fitted cotton turtlenecks in ivory and black are an essential layering piece for the winter. Not only do they help to keep your neck warm, but they are also a great layer to wear under dresses in winter. This is a chic and easy way to wear dresses and look stylish even when it’s cold.
12. Wear Sweaters Over Dresses
When you want to wear a dress even if it’s silk or short, I recommend layering a sweater over it. So it looks more like a sweater with a skirt. This is one of my favorite ways to wear dresses in winter but still stay warm.
