How To Be Stylish In Cold Weather
Layering clothes for winter is how I build outfits for warmer winter weather. After living in SoCal for 15 years, I perfected the art of layering. “Layering is quite practical, allowing a person to be ready for a wider range of temperatures without having to change an outfit completely”, according to Wikihow.com. For those of you living in cold winter climates, this post will help you learn to easily transition your wardrobe from winter to early spring.

Layering Clothes For Winter
1. Base Layers.
When I’m dressing for those Southern California winter days, I like to start building an outfit with a base layer. Sometimes my base is a simple white tee. It’s also one of the clothing staples I recommend every woman has in her wardrobe.
Another idea that works for a base layer could be a silk cami. Yes, you can wear a cami in the winter. I like to wear it under sweaters and let it peek out to soften my outfit. It’s also a great option for a layering piece if you want to wear something a little bit more dressy.
You can also have your base layer for winter be a really simple cotton turtleneck. In colder climates, you can wear a turtleneck under a heavy sweater or under a dress. But for milder winters, you could wear it under a blazer, cardigan, or jacket.
The next layering piece I like wearing is a lightweight sweater. I love the look of layering a knit under a blazer. But a lightweight sweater is another simple base layer. Then adding other layers on top depending on the day.
The last item that makes a great base layer is a dress. It could even be a silk dress. I like to style dresses in the winter with opaque tights, a great pair of boots, and a sweater on top.
2. Bottoms.
Some options for your bottoms when you’re layering clothes for winter could be a pair of jeans or leggings. I think leggings are great especially faux leather leggings. If you want to feel more dressed up in the winter wear them with a pair of tall or over-the-knee boots.
Another item you can wear on the bottom is a pencil skirt or a skirt that has a little bit more weight to it. I like to wear my leather pencil skirt this time of year. It’s a warmer layer than something more summery. If your legs feel cold, wear those over-the-knee boots and opaque tights. I love wearing a pencil skirt with OTK boots. It’s super chic.
3. Top Layers.
Some things you can easily wear over your base layer include a sweater. I love wearing knits over dresses or a silk cami. It could just be with a pair of jeans and some cute sneakers or ankle booties. I think that’s an easy way to get a second layer that you can always take off as the day warms up.
Think of your base layer as the item that you’re always going to have on for that day. All the layers that you put over can be easily taken off as the weather gets warmer or put back on as the weather gets colder.
Another must-have top layer is a cardigan. It can be any cardigan that you feel works for you. However, I do recommend having a few cardigans in classic styles and neutral colors. A classic cardigan can easily be styled over dresses, blouses, t-shirts, camis, and turtlenecks.
The next layering piece I really love is a structured jacket. Again you can wear it over a t-shirt, blouse or dress. So this is another great option for a second layer that you can take on and off.
I also recommend having a blazer as a top layer. A great blazer can be dressed up or down. Look for a blazer that’s classic and streamlined. I know oversized blazers are really on trend right now, but I personally stay away from them. I’m more on the petite side and I feel like oversized blazers look oversized, especially on petites. You can style a lightweight fitted sweater under a blazer. As well as a dress, turtleneck, cami or blouse.
4. Final Layer.
A must-have layer in my opinion is a leather jacket. Sometimes I will style a cardigan under my leather jacket for an extra layer. Being able to take off layers and or put them on depending on the temperature of the day is key to staying warm.
The last item I recommend for more mild winters is a classic wool coat. If you start with a base layer like a t-shirt, then style a cardigan on top, and depending on how cold it is that day wear a wool coat.
When you put a cardigan over a summer dress, it instantly makes it turn into a dress for spring or fall. If you style it with opaque tights, ankle booties, or OTK boots that winterizes a summer dress right away. Depending on the day, it’s so easy to wear a classic wool coat over it.
Think of these layering clothes as items you can take on and off easily. Layers are the key to dressing for mild winters. Many of these items are the closet essentials I recommend every woman has because they do help you get dressed easier no matter what the temperature is.
If you find yourself feeling cold some days, check to see if you are missing some of these staple layers for winter. Make a shopping list of the missing gaps to look for next time you shop. These pieces are essential to staying warm and comfortable throughout the year.
