12 Fashion Faux Pas To Avoid
1. Not Having The Right Undergarments.
When you don’t have the right undergarments for your outfits it can really ruin your whole look. Especially with cutouts still being in style like open backs, avoid having your bra strap show in the back. Easy solutions include the sticky bra.
2. The Paper Bag Waist Trend.
Even though a paper bag waist has been a trend for a while now, it doesn’t work with most body types. If you’re more of a straight body type and don’t have any curves it can actually help accentuate your body to look like you have curves. But if you are curvy or have any thickness around the waist, paper bag pants will make you look bigger in the middle.
3. Pleated Pants.
The next fashion faux pas to avoid is pleated pants. Pleats add more bulk because there is more fabric. It can look like more weight in that area. When you sit pleats also bunch up. If you have pleats in the front area below your waist it is typically not flattering.
4. Wearing An Extra Long Cardigan When You’re Petite.
When you wear a long cardigan or duster and you are petite, it will make you look shorter. They’re great on women that are taller but if you’re on the shorter side something so long will overwhelm your frame. Instead if you are petite, look for something that hits at hip length or even a little bit shorter.
In general when you’re looking for basic cardigans to add to your closet, if you’re petite avoid ones that are super long.
5. Crop Tops If You Carry Weight In The Middle.
Crop tops can be great on the younger generation if you’re on the slimmer side. But if you carry weight around the middle, they’re not flattering.

6. Sleeveless Dresses Or Tops With Bigger Arms.
The next fashion faux pas that made the list is if your arms are bigger avoid wearing sleeveless dresses or tops. The exception would be if it’s summer and you want something casual and cool. But if you’re wearing a sleeveless dress for a more formal occasion or for evening it’s not flattering to expose your arms.
When you’re exposing any part of your body whether it’s your legs, collarbone, or arms make sure it’s a part that you feel great about. Focus on bringing attention to the areas that you feel great about.
7. Ruffles If You’re Already Curvy.
If you are a straight shape, ruffles can be great for you to add curves. For example, if you have ruffles on your top it can make you look bustier. Ruffles again are made of extra fabric, so wherever those ruffles are on your clothing they’re making that area look bulkier.
If there are any areas that you are trying to hide, stay away from ruffles on that area. Look for clean tailored lines on those areas.
Ruffles can also make us look like we’re trying to be younger than we are.
8. Wearing Shapless Or Oversized Clothes To “Hide”.
This next fashion mistake is not just for women but also for men. When you’re wearing something that doesn’t have any shape or structure to it because you think it’s going to hide your problem areas, it’s actually going to look better if you find items that are more structured.
Having a heavier weight fabric versus fabrics like jersey will be more flattering. When you’re trying to hide an area, don’t go up a size in your clothing. It will make you look bigger than you are. Look for items that are more structured and tailored that is what will make you look slimmer.
9. Black And White Stripes.
In general, there’s a style rule that says to avoid horizontal stripes if they’re wide because they make you look bigger. I personally don’t mind the direction of the stripes, or the size of the stripes.
But the one thing about stripes that I think ruins your outfit is when the stripes are black and white. It reminds me of old jail uniforms. The contrast is more jarring to the eye. A navy and a cream, or a navy and an ivory is a more classic stylish way to wear stripes.
10. Convincing Yourself You Love An Item.
Stop trying to convince yourself that you love an item that you don’t. Whether it’s already in your closet and you’ve spent too much on it so you feel guilt about letting it go; or if you’re in the store and you feel like you need something, don’t convince yourself you like it if you don’t.
Whenever you’re trying something on when you’re shopping, or your decluttering your closet, use the seven second rule. In that first seven seconds when you put the item on, do you love it or are you on the fence? If it’s anything other than I absolutely love this in the first seven seconds, it needs to come out of your closet or it needs to go back on the rack.
11. Wearing Items That Don’t Fit.
Wearing things that don’t fit properly is the next common fashion faux pas. When things don’t fit well and you skip getting alterations, it’s a huge fashion mistake that can ruin your outfit. When you’re curating a closet that you love, those pieces need to fit you properly. If they don’t invest in having them tailored. If you’re resistant to getting them tailored, then it’s probably time to let them go.

12. Saving Your Clothes.
Don’t save your clothes for something special that may or may not happen in the future. Wear the pieces you love now, even if it’s only for you. Now is the time to live your life fully, and part of that is wearing the clothes that are in your closet that make you feel great.
