What’s Your Personal Style?
There are 9 main types of clothing styles. Knowing what your personal style is can help you curate your closet to one that you love. Once you know what style you’re drawn to and what you feel great in, then those are the pieces to bring into your closet. You’ll make fewer shopping mistakes which means you’ll save more time and money.
Something to keep in mind is that your personal style can evolve and change. It’s fluid and doesn’t always fit perfectly into one of these types of clothing styles. Instead, your personal clothing style can be several of these. For example, my style is classic, edgy but also feminine. It’s evolved over time as I’ve gotten older and become a mom.
The nine types of clothing styles that I’m sharing below are the ones that I have found to be the most universal among women.

Types Of Clothing Styles
1. Bohemian aka “Boho” Style
Think of this as an easy, breezy California vibe. That seemingly effortless, yet somewhat trendy and actually well thought out clothing style. Some of the things that define Boho style are flowy skirts, shirts with prints on them, floppy hats, and leather sandals or Western ankle booties.
The Bohemian clothing style feels like Coachella. Another thing that defines boho style is fringe. Fringe can be on a bag or a jacket. Also, gold or silver-rimmed sunglasses can sometimes be identified with this personal style type. Typically the preferred style of denim is a bell bottom.
Jewelry tends to be layers of beaded or leather long necklaces. Dress styles tend to be flowy and long maxi dresses are a staple. There are usually earth-tone prints but the boho clothing type can also be more colorful. Fabrics tend to be natural like suede, cotton, or denim, and feel earthy.
2. Classic Style
Classic style is defined by timeless pieces that will last. This clothing type doesn’t focus on trends but instead cares more about higher quality fabrics, and pieces that are constructed well and tailored to the body. Prints tend to be minimal or non-existent. Instead favoring solid neutral colors like navy, black, gray, ivory, cream, blush, and camel.
There’s not a lot of fussiness or embellishments and accessories are minimal. Pieces tend to be tailored and well fitting to the body’s silhouette. I
3. Preppy Style
Some of the things that define the preppy clothing style is having tops with a collar. It could be a white classic button down but it could also be a white collar peeking out from a dress. There are certain patterns that are associated with preppy style. Like hearts on sweaters, or navy and cream stripes. Preppy-style shoes tend to be simple. Something that you can just slip on like a ballet flat. This style tends to feel a little bit tomboyish.
Where a long flowy maxi skirt feels Bohemian and a tailored pencil skirt feels classic, for the preppy style it’s the circle skirt. It’s a bit shorter but it’s not tailored or fitted to the body.
4. Feminine Style
Someone who has a feminine clothing style tends to favor details like florals and softer colors like pink and lavender. Fabrics like lace or silk that are more fluid and soft feel like this style. This personal style avoids darker colors. There’s not a lot of black or navy.
The feminine clothing style type is someone that tends to wear more dresses and skirts. You also won’t see them wear more masculine shoes, or shoes that have a platform. Instead, their shoes are more simple, sleek, and feminine. You may also see them wearing ruffles.
Again where boho style is more maxi dresses and long flowy skirts, and classic style is a fitted pencil skirt, feminine style is somewhere in-between. The Silhouettes are more tailored to the body but with a little bit more flow and fabric than you would see in the classic style type.
5. Androgynous Style
Traditionally we would call this style type masculine. When the details of your outfits feel more masculine and have more structure to them you may have an androgynous style. With androgynous style you see a lot of traditionally menswear pieces like button-down shirts but in a menswear fit and a blazer worn with a pair of slacks or dress pants.
In general, this style wears solid colors in darker tones like black, navy, eggplant, and charcoal. Prints are minimal and if you see any they tend to be stripes or paisleys. When it comes to fits and silhouettes, things are not as tailored to the shape of the body. Shoes are more masculine styles like loafers or something that’s a bit heavier.
6. Edgy Style
Someone with an edgy style may wear a lot of leather or faux leather. There’s a cool factor with a lot of black. Sometimes there is a rock and roll vibe and feels a bit tough. The silhouettes are fitted and not flowy like in feminine or boho style.
The quintessential edgy outfit is a black leather moto jacket styled with a pair of cool black ankle boots. Jewelry tends to be minimal or there’ll be one statement piece that’s chunky or a bit heavier. When you do see a print it tends to be something like a band tee.
7. Trendy Style
The next clothing style is trendy. This is someone that loves wearing all the latest trends sometimes all together and their style is drawn to what’s the latest trend that’s happening in fashion. They’ll wear trends whether they work for them or not. The focus is on what is in now versus what’s going to work long-term.
You’ll see something like head-to-toe denim which is on trend right now but a trend type will incorporate it in a way that is more trendy. So it’s a cropped denim shirt with a cropped denim jacket and oversized jeans.
Someone who is drawn to trendy style wears the hottest colors of the season whether or not that color looks good on you. While someone with a classic or edgy style will have one statement piece while everything else is minimal, someone with a trendy style will sometimes mix all the trends together into an outfit.
8. Minimal Style
Someone with a minimal personal style wants to look put together but they don’t want it to be work. They want to have easy pieces in natural fabrics like cotton or silk. The minimal style type doesn’t want to fuss over accessories. Instead, they opt for minimal jewelry.
Nothing is overstated about their look and the colors tend to be solid neutrals. We don’t see a lot of prints or patterns with a minimal style type. This is where you see the foundation of a capsule wardrobe. They prefer to have quality basics in their wardrobe that are effortless and easy. Pieces they can mix and match without much thought.
Typically, you don’t see details like ruffles, lace, or patterns. It’s not about wearing things that are fitted but it’s also not about wearing things that are oversized. You wear pieces that are easy, that fit well, and that look good.
While someone with a preppy style will wear a white button-down shirt that’s cotton but with a lot of structure, and a classic clothing type might have a white button-down shirt that’s a luxurious fabric like silk, someone with a minimal style will wear a white button-down shirt but it’s a softer material like cotton or linen.
9. Vintage Style
This personal style defines someone who likes to incorporate pieces from another time period. They shop at vintage stores. The silhouettes are from different time periods. So there’ll be dress pants in a style from the 70s. Also, the fabrics are ones they used more in different time periods.
You’ll also see a lot of prints with vintage style. The colors are associated with a different time period. Accessories play a big role in vintage style. It avoids feeling dated because it’s intentional. This is someone that loves vintage-inspired outfits. They love incorporating pieces from another time period.

One thing I always recommend to my clients when they’re trying to figure out what their personal style is is to go into their closet and look at what their favorite pieces are. What are the pieces in your closet that you’re wearing again and again? Look at those pieces closely through the lens of these 9 types of clothing styles to determine what your personal style is. Which one or several of these resonate with you and feel like either the style you have or the style that you’re moving toward?
Use your style to make decisions when you’re editing your closet. Look at the pieces that you’re not wearing as much. What style are those pieces? This is probably not a style that you’re drawn to anymore. That will help you define your personal style and make choices to support that.
