Building a capsule wardrobe is all about versatile pieces. What staples are going to give you the most wearability, give you outfit options in every season, and stay timeless through changing trends? One (or two!) sweaters are an absolute must for a capsule wardrobe. I have compiled a list of some of my favorite sweater brands for building out your closet. I have options that are both splurge-worthy knits and budget-friendly favorites.

What to Look for In a Sweater

As with any piece in a capsule wardrobe, you want your sweater to be timeless. I recommend solid, neutral colors in a classic style. Building out this capsule wardrobe is not about going for trendy patterns, styles, or prints. Not that there’s anything wrong with those pieces, but that’s not what a capsule wardrobe is designed for. Instead, it’s about pieces that you can wear time and time again, with many other items in your closet. And as always, a high-quality piece will stand the test of time but there are excellent budget-friendly options on the market as well!

Sweaters for Every Season

A classic sweater is an essential clothing staple not only because we need something heavier as the weather cools, but also because they are an easy piece to style from day to night. In early fall, I love wearing knits with denim shorts and ankle booties for a simple transitional look. As we move into late fall and winter, styling a sweater becomes even easier. Wear your favorites with jeans, leggings, or a skirt, and pair them with ankle booties. Another way I style my dresses in fall and winter is by adding my favorite knits, opaque tights, and tall boots. Even in spring and summer, the nights get cooler and a sweater is the perfect layering piece to have on hand.
