How to Build An Outfit

Step 1: Choose Your Foundation Piece

create an outfit

First, you want to pick one item from your closet that you feel like wearing. It can be a specific color, something that works with the weather, or your plans for the day. Choose something you know you like and feel good about. This is going to be the foundation piece we’re starting with.

Step 2: Pick An Opposite Item

Next, pick out your second piece. When you choose the second item to go with your first piece, think of it having an opposite quality. Putting together an outfit is about bringing two opposite qualities in your pieces together. For example, a dressy pair of fitted black leggings (a capsule essential) can be styled with something oversized on top like a sweater to balance outfit proportions.

Step 3: Add Your Layers

The next thing you want to think about is your layers. If it’s summertime you don’t always need a layer, but a layer does help give an outfit more definition to help complete a look. Layers include jackets, cardigans, or anything else that goes over the base top.

Step 4: Choose Your Shoes

The next thing to think about when you’re building your outfit is your shoes. Your shoes can change the whole feel of a look. To change the outfit, you can choose the shoe to be more casual with a pair of sneakers or dress it up with a pair of pumps.

Step 5: Adding The Details

Next, add your details. This could be accessories, bags, sunglasses, jewelry, or belts. These are the details or accessories to make the look feel put together and complete. If you want to play with any of your jewelry make sure that if one of the elements of your outfit is a statement piece, keep your jewelry on the minimal side and avoid adding more statement pieces.

Step 6: Make Your Styling Tweaks

Finally, the last step to consider when you’re putting together an outfit is styling tweaks. What are those little tweaks you can do to make the outfit better? Sometimes, one little styling tweak can change a whole outfit. I’m always going to define my waist with a French tuck because it’s such an easy styling tweak to elevate a look.

If putting together outfits isn’t something that comes naturally to you, or it’s a bit harder, think about setting aside time once a week to play in your closet. Like anything we want to get better out, sometimes it takes practice.
