What’s Your Personal Style?
A classic fashion style isn’t something that I embraced until I got into my mid-30s. Now I use it to define my personal style. A classic fashion style includes timeless pieces in versatile styles. The pieces are streamlined, and there are not a lot of embellishments or excess details. You might have these pieces in your closet for 10 or even 20 years.
When building a foundation for a capsule wardrobe, think about bringing classic basic pieces into your closet. They should be simple high quality items in neutral colors that you can mix and match. If you are someone who decides to embrace a capsule wardrobe, it doesn’t mean that your personal style has to be classic. Classic pieces are versatile and can be styled in a lot of different ways.
Are you ready to have a wardrobe that reflects your personal style, works for your body, and makes it easy to put together outfits you feel great in?

Classic Fashion Style
Look 1: Victoria Beckham
I want to start by sharing one of my favorite style icons Victoria Beckham. In this first look, she’s wearing a classic camel wool coat. What makes this piece classic is that it’s streamlined, there’s not much going on, it’s in a neutral solid color, and it’s in a style that she could have gotten today or 5 years ago. It’s a piece that will last in both quality and style for many years. She’s wearing it over a simple black turtleneck, a pair of trousers, and a classic streamlined black boot. This outfit feels like the quintessential classic style.
Look 2: Victoria Beckham
Now, this next look is more casual. A classic style can range from casual looks to dressed-up looks. It’s the way pieces are styled and the details of each item that will make it a certain style type. In this look, Victoria Beckham is wearing a luxe, neutral-colored, streamlined sweater. It’s a sweater that looks like it’s made of a luxe fabric like cashmere. She’s wearing it with a pair of slim black joggers and streamlined white sneakers. Even though this outfit feels casual, it’s also put together. I wanted to show you a casual outfit in a classic style type, but I also wanted to show you this look because although the photo was taken in 2014, it’s a look that you would still see today.
Look 3: Victoria Beckham
Another thing you’ll tend to see in a classic style type is monochromatic looks. Here she’s wearing a head-to-toe blue look with a pair of black ankle boots. She’s wearing a beautiful, high-quality knit sweater. She has styled it with a silk skirt in another shade of blue, creating a monochromatic look. While we also see monochromatic looks in a more minimal style type, the difference is that a minimal style type chooses to wear effortless pieces. You would see fabrics like cotton instead of silks, and simple shoes that focus more on comfort.
Look 4: Victoria Beckham
In this next look of Victoria Beckham, she’s wearing another monochromatic look. She is wearing head-to-toe black. While we tend to see a lot of black in an edgy style type, this fits more into a classic style type because she’s wearing a tailored black blazer. She’s also wearing a skinny-leg jean and has a classic-style bag. If this was more of an edgy style type, we might see a graphic tee under the blazer, a pair of faux leather leggings, or a combat boot. Instead, she has a sleek ankle boot and everything’s streamlined and fitted. These are pieces that are timeless.
Look 5: Victoria Beckham
Here’s another classic look. She’s wearing a luxe neutral ivory sweater. It’s not oversized but fits her shape, and she has paired it with a streamlined skirt. Although there’s a pattern in the skirt, it’s a subtle one that disappears and works like a neutral. She’s wearing a classic slim boot and a pair of classic sunglasses. This outfit looks like she could have worn it yesterday, even though this photo was taken in 2014.
Look 1: Rosie Huntington-Whitely
The next classic style icon is Rosie Huntington-Whiteley. In this first outfit, she’s wearing a streamlined wool coat in a neutral color. She has a pair of black slim-leg trousers and a classic tote bag.
Look 2: Rosie Huntington-Whiteley
In this next look, she has a matching blazer and trousers set. There are elements here that can feel like other style types. The fact that she’s wearing a matching suit could fall into the androgynous style type, but there are a couple of things that make it feel more like a classic style. She has chosen neutral colors with a subtle pattern, and the style of her trousers evokes a classic or romantic feel. There’s more fluidity to it than you would see in an androgynous style.
She’s wearing an open-toed neutral-heeled sandal which is a classic shoe choice versus an androgynous style type that might wear a brogue or chunky loafer. She has a Gucci waist belt bag in classic black leather. She has chosen neutral colors and styled them very simply.
Look 1: Jennifer Aniston
Here is another casual outfit in a classic style by Jennifer Aniston. Here she has a long, streamlined, fitted, camel wool coat. There’s not much going on there are no embellishments, no zippers, and it’s in a neutral color. It’s in a luxe fabric and she’s wearing it over a simple elevated t-shirt. She has a pair of track pants on, but she’s completing this look with a white streamlined sneaker instead of an athletic sneaker that you might see in an androgynous or trendy style type. For accessories, she’s chosen a pair of aviator sunglasses, a timeless classic that has been around for years.
Look 1: Miranda Kerr
In this next classic look, we have Miranda Kerr. There are elements of edgy but I decided to put it more with a classic style type. Her black denim jeans have a coated finish, giving them a leather-like appearance that exudes an edgy style. But, a black monochrome outfit is more in line with a classic style type.
She’s also wearing a simple black top underneath the black wool fitted jacket. Her bag fits into a classic style because it feels modern and timeless. Her sunglasses are a classic black shape that she could have had in her closet for years. The way she has styled these pieces together makes this outfit feel classic.
Look 1: Karlie Kloss
In this next outfit, Karlie Kloss embodies the classic fashion style type. She is wearing a fitted long streamlined coat in a neutral color. She’s wearing a basic crew neck fitted black sweater and paired it with streamlined ivory wide-leg trousers. Her shoe of choice is a black classic pump and her accessories are classic and streamlined. She has black simple sunglasses and an elevated black bag. Her whole look is effortless, but it also looks put together and elevated. These are pieces she could have had in her closet for years, and that’s what makes this the quintessential classic look.

Another reason I am drawn to this style, especially as someone in my 40s, is because it offers versatility in my wardrobe. Even though I have less in my closet, I feel like I always have something to wear no matter where I’m going.
