1. Declutter Your Wardrobe

The first tip for looking put together is to declutter your wardrobe. Go through your closet and take an honest look at the pieces you’re not wearing. The ones that don’t fit well, don’t reflect your style, or don’t make you feel good. Whether you choose to give them away or simply store them somewhere out of sight, the goal is to get them out of your everyday wardrobe. When your closet is filled with items you don’t love or wear, it only adds to decision fatigue. More clothes don’t make it easier to get dressed. Fewer, better options do. Having a closet full of things you don’t reach for creates more overwhelm, more stress, and less clarity when putting together outfits.

I recommend doing a wardrobe edit at least once a year. You don’t have to get rid of everything, but start being more intentional with what stays. Ask yourself, “Does this work for my current lifestyle? Does this align with my personal style? Do I feel good when I wear it?” If the answer is no, it’s probably not serving you. If you haven’t done a closet edit in a while, or ever, this is one of the most powerful steps you can take toward creating a wardrobe that truly works for you.

It’s easy to think that shopping for more clothes will solve the problem, but adding more to an already overwhelming wardrobe just increases the stress. If you’re bringing in new pieces without clarity on what you love, what fits, and what you’re missing, you’re not solving the problem; you’re making it worse. Decluttering is the foundation of building a wardrobe you feel great in and creating ease in your mornings.

2. Practice Making Outfits

One of the most helpful things you can do is set aside time once a week to plan your outfits. Give yourself 30 minutes to an hour to create looks using the pieces in your closet. Once you’ve done a proper declutter and you’re left with only the clothes that fit you well and make you feel good, this step becomes much easier.

Start practicing by putting together outfits with what you already have. Use a clothing rack if you have one, or simply lay the outfits out on your bed. Think of it like meal prepping: if you meal prep to save time during the week, especially if you have a family or a busy schedule, you can do the same thing with your wardrobe.

Putting together outfits when you’ve set aside time to do so can alleviate stress. You’re not making last-minute decisions while trying to dress yourself, get the kids ready, and let the dog out. Instead, imagine starting each day with your outfit already chosen and ready to go. That one simple change eliminates a big decision and gives you more ease in your morning routine. This helps you look put together because you’ve taken the time to thoughtfully style your outfits in advance.

3. Take A Photo

Once you’ve put together an outfit that makes you feel good, take a photo of it. Create an album on your phone specifically for these go-to looks. That way, the next time you’re short on time or mental energy, you can scroll through your outfit photos and quickly choose something you already know works. This simple habit makes getting dressed easier.

You’ve already done the hard work of figuring out which outfit formulas work for your body and your lifestyle, so make sure to document them. We’re not always in the right headspace to come up with new outfit ideas, especially when life gets busy. Having a visual catalog of your favorite looks can make a big difference. Instead of stressing or second-guessing in the moment, you can just reference your album, pull out those pieces, and walk out the door feeling confident and polished.

4. What’s Missing?

Figure out what you’re missing in your wardrobe. What are the pieces that are making it difficult to put together outfits? If you don’t have the wardrobe essentials that work for your body and lifestyle, it’s going to be hard to look put together. You’ll always feel like something’s missing. Take the time to identify those foundational pieces that you’re lacking, and make a shopping list.

5. Pay Attention To What You Like To Wear

If you want to look effortless and stylish, you need to start paying attention to what you like and feel good in. What are the colors, the silhouettes, the things you’re naturally drawn to, and what are the pieces that feel off? Having the intention to figure it out has everything to do with what you actually enjoy wearing.

What are the pieces you’re reaching for regularly? What styles, cuts, and colors feel like you? Which accessories, like adding a belt, choosing hoop earrings, or carrying a certain bag, make an outfit feel authentically you? Those are the elements that define your personal style and help you look polished. When you bring more awareness and intention to your clothes and wardrobe, getting dressed becomes easier, more enjoyable, and less stressful. You’ll be able to put together outfits that not only look good but feel good too.
