10 Fall Wardrobe Essentials
1. Classic Cardigan.
If you’re only going to have one I recommend black but I also recommend having a more neutral one as well like gray or ivory. You’ll get so much use out of them no matter which climate you live in. A good cardigan is an essential wardrobe piece. In terms of style, I think one that is open and hits just below the hip is classic. Even though there are so many variations on a cardigan but as your staple, it’s helpful to have one that is a foundation piece. Choose one that is an investment and you’ll have it for years.
2. Lightweight Sweater.
Having a lightweight sweater easily transitions across the seasons. Choose one that is versatile and classic in style. One of the key things about an essential item is that it’s versatile. That means it can be easily worn in so many different ways. It can be styled for daytime or evening.
3. Faux Leather Leggings.
If you’re not into faux leather you can do a dressy black legging. These are an easy wardrobe staple that can be styled with blouses, sweaters, and even t-shirts. You can wear them with a pair of flat boots and an oversized sweater for daytime but you can also dress them up with a blouse and a heel for evening. For more faux leather legging styling ideas I created a video.
4. Knit Dress.
A knit or sweater dress is another great clothing staple. If you look for one that is lighter weight you’ll be able to style it for several seasons. Wear it with ankle boots or sneakers in the fall. In the winter, add opaque tights and tall boots. You can dress it up or down.
5. Black Blazer.
I’ve had my black blazer for eight or nine years. A classic black blazer never goes out of style. It easily goes from day to night or casual to dressy. Look for one that’s structured but isn’t just work appropriate. Another big trend right now you’ve probably seen is oversized blazers. I think they’re a fun-of-the-moment piece to style as long as you have your staple black blazer in your closet. That’s the one you’ll get the most use out of.
6. Leather (or Faux) Jacket.
A leather jacket is my next fall clothing staple. I also wear mine in the summer with shorts if it’s a bit cooler. If you’re not into leather jackets a jean jacket is a good alternative. Look for a leather jacket that is either neutral or black. Skip embellishments, fringe, extra hardware, and oversized details as you won’t get as much longevity from your jacket.
For fall style it over dresses or wear it with a sweater. It’s definitely a must-have fall item.
7. Dark Wash Denim.
My next fall clothing staple is an essential all year round and that’s the jean. Your essential jean is in a medium to dark blue wash that you love the fit and that you can wear from day to night.
8. White T-Shirt.
The eighth wardrobe essential I recommend for fall is another item I think you should have all year round in your closet, an elevated white T-shirt. It doesn’t matter if it’s a v-neck or a crew neck. The key to your t-shirt being a clothing staple is that it’s more elevated. What makes it elevated is the quality and feel of the fabric, the fit, and the style. Look at the collar and the stitching details. An essential white t-shirt can be styled endlessly.

9. Long Sleeve Silk (or Silk-like)Blouse.
Your blouse could be any solid color that you feel great in. Look for one that is a little bit dressier than a cotton blouse. A staple long sleeve blouse can be styled with jeans, faux leather leggings, or a skirt.
10. Ankle Booties.
The final wardrobe essential you need for fall is an ankle boot. Ideally, one that is flat or has a low heel that is comfortable enough to walk in all day. Choose a classic pair that you can wear from day to night. Ankle boots that are in a neutral color like camel, taupe, gray, or tan are a perfect wardrobe essential for fall. Style them with dresses, jeans, leggings, or skirts.
These are the 10 fall wardrobe essentials every woman needs in her closet to get dressed easily no matter where she’s going or what she’s doing.
