8 Style & Fashion Rules To Break

1. Wearing navy and black together.

I love wearing navy and black together. It offers a bit more interest than wearing all black or all navy. It’s on-trend and has been for the last few years. So rule number one to break is to wear navy and black together.

2. Mixing gold and silver jewelry together.

It’s chic to mix your metals. When you are wearing gold and silver together, focus on pieces that are more understated. Look for everyday delicate pieces versus large statement pieces. Mixing your metals, silver, and gold whether it’s on your bag, your shoe, or your wrist you can wear those together as long as they’re understated.

3. Dressing for your age.

There is a fine line between breaking this style rule in a way that’s put together and sophisticated and breaking it in a way that doesn’t work or help your style. Right now a lot of trends are more appropriate for the younger generation. If you’re in your 20s or in your early 30s, cutouts or crop tops can work great. But I don’t necessarily recommend wearing those trends if you’re older.

I don’t feel like once you turn 40 or 50 you have to be wearing button-up shirts or be completely covered and avoid anything trendy or fun. You want to break this rule in a way that’s going to elevate your style no matter what your age is. Focus on what’s appropriate for your body type, your age, and where you’re going. But, you also want to break this rule and have fun with your style. So when you’re breaking this rule, do so with a little bit of wisdom.

4. Wearing white after Labor Day.

This is a really old rule that we can all stop following. For the last few years, winter white has been everywhere across all seasons. I love wearing shades of white all year round. The one thing I would recommend against it is if you live in a cold climate you’re going to want to avoid white linen in the wintertime for warmth reasons. Every shade of white is stylish for every season.

5. Matching your outfit.

Whoever came up with this fashion rule definitely wasn’t around for the spring trends that are everywhere right now. Matching sets is one of the biggest trends this season. Wearing a matching top and bottom and even matching the color of your shoes and bag is stylish. This is a rule that I recommend breaking especially for the season right now where matching sets are super chic.

6. Never repeating an outfit.

I had a hard time with this rule in elementary school and especially in high school as I got older and more interested in style. It wasn’t ‘acceptable’ to repeat outfits. But this is a rule we should all stop following. You should re-wear outfits. I’m a big believer in the capsule wardrobe and why it makes getting dressed so easy.

This rule should absolutely be broken, especially with outfits that you love. The foundation of your wardrobe should be pieces that you love and can mix and match. Most of us want to be more conscious of what we’re wearing and buying. We want to avoid accumulating waste as it’s harmful to the environment and our wallets. But we also want outfits that feel amazing and that we can wear again and again. So re-wear your outfits and feel good about them.

7. Styling denim on denim.

I don’t wear denim on denim because it doesn’t feel authentic to my style, but this rule no longer applies. Wearing denim on denim is when you’re in head-to-toe denim. If you have a denim chambray shirt and you’re wearing jeans is an example. I’ve seen it done really well and fashion-forward. The key is that you want to have different washes of denim. If you’re wearing a lighter wash button-down denim shirt or jacket style it with a denim bottom in a darker wash or vice versa. Break this rule by mixing your denim washes together.

8. Avoiding clothes that match your skin tone.

This has been a big trend over the last few years and I love it. I think it’s a beautiful way to wear a monochromatic outfit when it matches your skin tone. This is an understated and minimalist way to look super chic and put together.

These are the eight style & fashion rules that I encourage you to break. I have broken most of these myself and I recommend you try breaking one or two that feel best for you.
