Rectangle Body Type Styling Do’s & Don’ts
A rectangle body type is the most common body type and makes up 46% of women. Someone who has a rectangle body type has almost the same measurements for their bust, waist, and hips. It gives the appearance of a rectangle body shape or a straight body.
Typically, this body type is on the slimmer side, and they tend to not be as curvy. However, some rectangle body types have a fuller bust and a fuller bottom. What makes them a rectangle body type is that their waist has a similar measurement to the bust and hips.

How To Dress A Rectangle Body Shape | Video
Rectangle-shaped Celebrities
Look 1: Victoria Beckham
Victoria Beckham’s style is one of my favorite celebrity styles. However, in this first look, she’s wearing an oversized suit which doesn’t work great on a rectangle shape. This suit accentuates her lack of curves and she gets lost in it.
Look 2: Victoria Beckham
In comparison to the last outfit, in this look, she’s also wearing a pantsuit. However, it’s tailored and fitted to her body so we can see more of her shape. It’s more defined, and it doesn’t overwhelm her frame. If you’d like to accentuate your curves or give the illusion that you have curves, stay away from oversized pieces because they hide the body.
Look 3: Victoria Beckham
In this next look, she’s wearing a dress with a print. A rectangle body type can wear prints easily more than any other body shape. However, this dress is oversized and too big for her frame.
Look 4: Victoria Beckham
When you compare the last outfit to this one, it’s more fitted to her body. Wearing tailored or fitted clothing works well for this body type.
Look 5: Victoria Beckham
This next look works beautifully on her. If you have a rectangle body shape, it’s easy to add curves by adding extra fabric in areas you’d like to give the illusion of curves. Her top has more structure in the shoulders. It’s also a heavier fabric and adds more width on top. She’s also wearing a pleated skirt adding more width to her hips. The look is pulled together by accentuating her waist and gives her body the appearance of more curves.
Look 6: Victoria Beckham
In this next look, her waist is accentuated. There’s also more structure on the shoulders, which makes that area look wider. The bottom part of the dress comes out giving her the appearance of hips.
Look 7: Victoria Beckham
In this look, she’s wearing a dress that works for a rectangle body type. A halter top is a great top style for women with smaller busts. This dress is fitted and shows her shape.
Look 1: Kendall Jenner
The next famous rectangle body type is Kendall Jenner. This look works for her straight shape because of all that fabric on the hip area. It accentuates the hips and makes them look wider. This works for somebody who is not curvy. She’s also drawing attention up by having the slit in the bust area.
Look 2: Kendall Jenner
This next look is one of my favorites of Kendall’s of all time. This outfit is perfect for a rectangle body type. She’s wearing a crop top to show her waist. The sleeves are puffy so it’s adding width up top to give the appearance of curves. The waist is defined and wearing a high-waisted wide-leg pant gives the illusion of a wider bottom.
Look 3: Kendall Jenner
One of the things a rectangle body type can struggle with sometimes is appearing more feminine. This next look from Kendall makes her look more boyish because she’s wearing a structured button-up shirt which feels more masculine. While I think this type of shirt can work on most shapes if you don’t have curves, a button-up shirt may give a more masculine appearance.
If you have a rectangle body type and want to appear more feminine, look for details like ruffles, soft fabrics like silk, and things that look more fluid. Also, draw attention up by showing off your collarbone with lower necklines.
Look 4: Kendall Jenner
This next look is my least favorite outfit of Kendalls. If you’re looking to create curves or give your body more definition, wearing something without any shape in a drapey fabric doesn’t always work. The neckline is also high, and her arms and legs are covered making her get lost in this dress.
Look 5: Kendall Jenner
Comparing that last look to this look, I think this works for a rectangle body type. Her waist is defined and there are pleats in the skirt so it billows to give her the look of curves on her bottom half. Although we’re not seeing much skin up top, the structure of the dress and shoulders gives the illusion of a bigger bust. This helps balance and give dimension, shape, and curves to an otherwise straight body.
Look 1: Gigi Hadid
The next celebrity who has a rectangle body type is Gigi Hadid. Here she’s wearing pleated pants. Pleated pants work on a rectangle body type because they add dimension and width to your body. This body shape can add fabric in a lot of different areas and it still works.
Look 2: Gigi Hadid
In this look, she’s wearing a skirt with extra fabric. All that extra fabric gives the illusion of wider hips, especially when the waist is accentuated. While this skirt wouldn’t work as great on a pear body shape, it would also work for an inverted triangle body type who is straight through their hips.
Look 3: Gigi Hadid
This next look of Gigi’s is not one of my favorites. Here she is wearing an oversized outfit from head-to-toe. While this may fit her personal style, we’re talking about what silhouettes work best for this body shape. Wearing something oversized doesn’t accentuate any part of the body. It makes her look wider in all areas, but it still makes her look like she has a rectangle shape, so it doesn’t work.
Look 4: Gigi Hadid
In this next look, she’s wearing a crop top which works great for a rectangle body type because it helps to define the waist. When you can see skin in your midsection, it almost works like a belt. The bagginess of the jeans balances out nicely with the crop top.
If you’re more of a rectangle body type but would like to add more curves or the illusion of curves, think about clothes that accentuate your waist. Look for extra fabric in the shoulder and hip areas to widen them and give the illusion of curves.
Knowing what your body shape is can help you choose clothes that work for you and curate a wardrobe you’ll love.
