12 Ways To Dress For Winter
1. Invest in your outerwear.
When it’s cold outside we tend to bundle up to be warm but most of us also want to be stylish. Your outerwear is the first thing that people are going to see in the winter. It’s what you’re wearing over your outfit of the day. Make sure your coat has pockets to keep your hands warm even if you’re wearing gloves.
Another style tip for your winter outerwear is to make sure your coats are long. No shorter than just above the knee. Even if you want to wear a dress in the winter, a longer coat will help keep you warm. Julia Guerra writes in InStyle, “Staying warm is no small feat once temperatures start dipping below freezing, so while puffers and short tailored coats are oh so cute, celebrity stylist Cindy Conroy would like to remind you that long outerwear is the name of the game when it comes to donning a dress., ‘With so much airflow organically built into the garment, a long coat made of wool, shearling, faux fur or cashmere is your new best friend for staying toasty,’ she says.”
2. Have weatherproof boots.
Investing in boots that are made of leather or suede that can take water damage is a must in the winter. I also recommend making sure that they’re flat so that on those colder days if there’s snow on the ground or ice you’re less likely to slip. Over-the-knee boots are especially great for dressing in winter because they give you an extra layer over your leggings, jeans, or tights. If over-the-knee boots aren’t your style I recommend wearing a tall boot in the winter so it comes just below the knee. That way it provides you with as much warmth as possible for your legs.
Putting Me Together writes, “Wear taller boots rather than ankle boots. Taller boots keep your legs much warmer, so if it’s really cold, go for those whenever you can as opposed to ankle boots. You can also add boot socks to tall boots for even more warmth”.
3. Wear your sunglasses.
Sunglasses are an easy statement piece you can throw on even if you’re running out the door. Even on gray days, I recommend wearing a pair of sunglasses that can help complete and elevate your look.
4. Invest in chunky knits.
Ideally a chunky knit with a high neck. I love a high-neck knit because it’s like you’re wearing a scarf. Chunky knits are like being wrapped in a blanket and you can layer fitted thermals underneath as well.
5. Have several pairs of opaque tights.
I like to get black, gray, and winter white opaque tights. These are great when you want to have that additional layer on colder days. You can wear them under dress pants or with dresses over-the-knee boots. They give you a warm layer but don’t take away from you looking feminine and stylish.
6. Wear a sweater dress.
A neutral sweater dress is a versatile and super chic warm option for winter. I would style it with opaque tights and over-the-knee boots. Knit dresses are an easy way to look put together and stylish even when it’s cold outside.
7. Wear a cashmere scarf.
I especially like a warm cashmere scarf I can wrap around my neck several times. Mine is from White + Warren and is available in a lot of colors. You can style it in so many ways because it’s really long. Wearing a chic cashmere scarf can elevate your look while keeping you warm and cozy.
8. Have a pair of leather or faux leather leggings.
Having a pair of leather or faux leather leggings is a must for staying chic in the winter. You can wear them with a long sweater and over-the-knee boots. It’s such an easy way to elevate a look while staying warm.
9. Purchase thermals.
I don’t wear thermals anymore because I live in Los Angeles but when I used to live on the east coast I had a collection of Patagonia thermals. I would wear thermals under my jeans, dresses, and sweaters for an additional layer. They are designed to regulate your body temperature so that you stay warm but don’t get too hot. Thermals are the key to being able to wear all your favorite looks in the winter.
10. Master layering.
Not only does layering make your wardrobe appear so much bigger, but it’s also the key to weather all year round. Layering gives the illusion that you have a larger wardrobe than you do because with just a few layering pieces like cardigans or little jackets you can style so many different outfits. I also like to wear cardigans over my sweater dresses or my thinner sweaters for that extra layer of warmth. Having several classic layering pieces in neutral colors is the key to not being cold.
11. Use a fitted turtleneck as a base for your outfits.
A fitted turtleneck is not only an essential layering piece for winter because it covers your neck, but it is also versatile enough for spring and fall. Wearing a turtleneck under a dress in the winter is an easy way to get to wear some of your dresses that are silk or short sleeve or have a low neckline in the colder months.
According to Alexis Bennett in VOGUE, “The classic turtleneck is a winter wardrobe essential that will probably give you the most mileage. Not only are they great options for wearing alone with jeans, but they also pair well with dresses”.
12. Wear a sweater over a dress.
My final tip for looking stylish on those colder days is to wear a sweater over a dress. When you style a sweater over a dress, it looks more like you’re wearing a sweater with a skirt. This is one of my favorite easy ways for how to dress for winter and still look chic.
