Something you may not know about me is that I have Diastasis Recti or DR. Diastasis Recti is when your abdominal wall separates after being pregnant. It’s fairly common and leaves behind the dreaded “mom pooch”. I’ve had this since having my daughter seven years ago and it’s really only corrected with surgery. At this point, I haven’t opted for surgery, but I have been able to hide it for all these years with the styling tricks I’m going to share here. Even if you don’t have abdominal separation but you have extra weight around the middle that you’re trying to hide, the tips below will help you do just that.

11 Style Tricks To Hide A Tummy
1. Look For Clothes Made Of Heavier Fabrics.
Thicker fabrics like poplin do a better job at hiding problem areas versus lighter fabrics like linen or satin. Heavier materials have a more built-in structure. Leather and denim are also going to hide a tummy. You want to stay away from jersey fabric as well because it is not forgiving.
If you’re purchasing items that are made of lighter materials, make sure they are lined. The extra layer of fabric will help create the same structure as some thicker materials.
Also, look for structured tops and blouses because they will do a much better job at hiding extra weight around the middle.
2. Find Clothes With Texture.
Texture in your fabrics can help hide problem areas. Look for pieces that are ribbed, knit, or that have a lifted design in the fabric. Having clothes with texture will create the illusion of a smoother and smaller waist.
3. Opt For Pieces With Ruching Near And Around The Midsection.
Ruching helps conceal problem areas. It gives the illusion of a flatter stomach.
4. Wear High-Waisted Jeans, Pants, And Skirts.
High-waisted bottoms smooth out the stomach area and create the illusion of a flatter stomach. My favorite brand of high-waisted jeans are by Frame. That particular denim has extra stretch and my Personal Styling clients with a tummy find them more comfortable.
Bottoms that are high-waisted, lengthen the appearance of the torso and flatten a pooch.
5. Perfect The Front Tuck.
The next styling trick I recommend doing to hide a tummy is a front tuck otherwise known as a half tuck. When you’re wearing any top like a t-shirt or blouse that is a bit looser or boxy, I recommend doing a front tuck to create the illusion of a flat stomach and an hourglass shape.
This video shows you exactly how to do a half-tuck. I am a big fan of the front tuck and never leave home without one.
6. Balance Your Outfit Proportions.
Pair looser tops with more fitted bottoms. For example, if you’re wearing a fitted pencil skirt, a pair of leggings, or skinny jeans; you want to balance the proportions of your outfit with a more flowy or loose top. Wearing a head-to-toe baggy outfit or a head-to-toe skin-tight outfit is not flattering for most women. When you balance your look it will make you look more put together and give the illusion of a flatter tummy.
7. Wear Dark Solid Colors.
Monochromatic darker colors have an overall slimming effect. You also want to avoid large prints. Large prints draw attention to the area and can create the opposite appearance.
8. Look For Flattering Dress Silhouettes.
There are certain dress silhouettes that are helpful for women when trying to hide a tummy. Look for dresses where the top is slightly more billowy but goes in at the waist, and the bottom is fitted and even ruched. This style of dresses creates a natural front tuck that conceals the mom pooch perfectly.
Veronica Beard makes several dresses each season in this silhouette.
9. Avoid Oversized Pieces.
When using clothing to hide a tummy, avoid oversized pieces items. Sometimes people think wearing oversized clothes helps them hide the extra weight. But when you’re wearing pieces that are too big, it makes you look bigger than you are. Instead, look for structured pieces that are tailored with details like ruching or texture.
10. Add A Structured Layer.
The next style trick is adding a structured layer to your outfit. A classic leather or denim jacket has structure and clean lines. You also want to make sure your layer is fitted. So even if you’re wearing a more billowy top or dress, when you add a structured layer it gives the illusion of having a flatter tummy.
11. Accentuate Other Parts Of Your Body That You Love.
When you accentuate other areas of your body that you feel great about, you draw attention away from the areas that you’re trying to hide. If you love your arms, wear sleeveless tops where you can see your arms. Another example is if you love your legs, wear above-the-knee skirts.
We all have areas that we feel great about. You don’t want to cover up those parts of your body. Show off those areas with what you’re wearing. Whatever areas you love about your body right now, let them be visible. Accentuate those areas so that the eye is drawn to those areas instead of a tummy.
These are the 11 easy styling tricks that I personally use. If you’re dealing with the same issue as me and asking yourself how to dress your body type to hide a tummy, I recommend trying these fashion tips out.
