I’m going to show you how to make your outfits better and wear more of your clothes using one simple, easy styling formula. After working with thousands of women, I’ve found that many women have a hard time putting outfits together. They’re not sure what works or what’s missing from their closet. One common reason for this is having too many statement pieces and not enough foundational basics.
While statement pieces are fun and reflect personal style, foundational pieces make it easy to put outfits together and style bold items. Statement pieces are anything in your wardrobe with prints, bright or non-neutral colors, interesting details, and exaggerated silhouettes.

If you love bold pieces and feel they reflect your style, that’s ok. Just make sure you also have enough solid, neutral, streamlined basics so you can style those statement items easily. Also, remember that your statement pieces aren’t meant to be versatile. They won’t get as much wear as your basics. By using a simple styling formula, you can get more wear out of your statement pieces and make the most of your wardrobe.

1. Start With One Item

Firstly, be intentional with your styling. Start with one item. For example, start with a statement piece. Once you’ve picked that item, look at the rest of your wardrobe and ask: What can I pair with this to make the outfit work? Because statement pieces already stand out, you want everything else in your outfit to feel more minimal and simple. That could mean streamlined silhouettes or solid, classic colors. This helps the statement piece pop, while the rest of your look supports it without competing.
That’s the key idea: Pick one statement piece for your outfit and let the rest of your look be your neutral, foundational basics. The same goes for accessories. If you want to wear a bold, chunky bracelet, for example, keep the rest of your outfit simple for balance.

Now, can you wear a graphic tee with a printed bottom? Sure! I’ve seen people do it and look amazing. If you feel good wearing statement pieces together, go for it. But if you’re someone who struggles with getting dressed or if more than one statement feels like too much for your personal style, try using this simple formula: choose one statement piece, and keep everything else streamlined and minimal.
2. Add A Pop Of Color

I love using a statement as a pop of color on my bag or shoes. It’s a fun and easy way to add a little interest to an outfit. Wearing something like a colorful shoe with a more streamlined, neutral outfit is a great way to express your style. Bringing in a statement through your accessories is also a fun option, especially if your style leans more minimal.

If you’re curious to try more statement pieces but feel it’s out of your comfort zone, start with something away from your face. Maybe a printed or colorful skirt, bright shoes, or a bold accessory. Generally, it’s an easy and approachable way to follow the one-statement formula while still keeping the rest of your outfit neutral and streamlined.
3. Use Texture In Your Outfit

Finally, another way you can bring in a statement into your outfits is through your fabric choices. Since my style leans more toward minimal and classic, something like leather is a great way for me to add interest. Even if it’s in a neutral color or a streamlined silhouette, the fabric choice becomes the statement.
I hope this post gave you some new ways to look at your clothes and style your outfits. Maybe you realized your closet is full of statement pieces, and you need to bring in more basics or foundation items. Or maybe your wardrobe is mostly neutrals and solids, and now you’re inspired to add some statement pieces.
This is such an easy formula. Hopefully, it helps you start putting together outfits you feel good in, using the clothes you already have, while also seeing your wardrobe in a whole new way.
