12 Tips For Creating Space In Your Closet
Growing up, I shared a very small room with my sister. I say room because it had no closet so it technically wasn’t a bedroom. All of my clothes were in a dresser that was in our living room. That’s where I kept everything all the way through high school.
As you can imagine, even as a kid, I got really resourceful in learning ways to organize and create more space. A lot of those ways I have cultivated to work for my current closet, as well as for my clients’ closets. These 12 tips will help you maximize your wardrobe space and create a closet that you love.

12 Tips For How To Organize A Closet
1. Simplify Your Wardrobe.
Have a capsule wardrobe. When you have a small closet space it’s helpful to have fewer higher-quality items than having a closet stuffed with items you don’t wear. Tip number one for how to organize a closet is to simplify by having a capsule wardrobe.
2. Declutter Your Clothes.
Getting rid of the items that you don’t need, that you don’t wear, and that you don’t love, will create so much space. Decluttering your wardrobe several times a year will help you refine your style and maximize your closet.
3. Stop Using Your Closet As Storage.
Where your wardrobe lives should not be the same place where you store holiday decorations or your kid’s artwork or other stuff. Non-wardrobe related items shouldn’t be in your closet. Either find another place for them or get rid of them.
If you absolutely have no other place for storage, then I recommend getting some pretty baskets. Store them out of view on a shelf in your closet.
4. Don’t Hang Sentimental Items.
Your sentimental items shouldn’t be hanging in your closet. Ideally, they should not even be in your closet. These are the items that you don’t want to let go of but that you don’t actually wear. They have an emotional connection to your life. Try to store them elsewhere.
5. Invest In Velvet Hangers.
My next tip for how to organize a closet is not only having hangers that match but also investing in space saving velvet hangers. If you don’t have a lot of closet space, this is a great way to be able to maximize the items you hang in your closet. Having your hangers be uniform is also another great way to bring intention into your space.
6. Keep Lounge & Workout Wear In A Dresser.
Avoid keeping your bathrobe, pajamas or workout clothes in your closet. Keep these items in a dresser. Your closet should only have items hanging that you love are wear for your everyday “outside” life.
7. Use Every Inch Of Space.
It’s incredibly easy these days to put up rods or more shelves. There are so many inexpensive ways to do it yourself. If your closet is high think about having shelves high up and investing in a stepstool for easy access.
8. Store Heavy Coats Elsewhere.
Heavy winter items like your coats or ski jackets should be stored elsewhere. Avoid hanging them in your closet with your everyday wardrobe. Unless you live in Alaska or go skiing every weekend, you don’t use these items everyday.
9. Create A Separate Space For Shoes.
If you’re maximizing your space, either use a shoe rack on the floor of your closet or create some easy shelving for your shoes. There are so many different options available for where to keep your shoes without taking up a lot of space.
10. Use Storage Bins For Accessories.
Storage bins are a great place to organize your accessories. Think of your closet like a puzzle. Ask yourself where all the pieces fit and what’s going to be the easiest way for you to access those pieces.
11. Store Clothes Away For Other Seasons.
Ideally I recommend having your entire everyday wardrobe in your closet all year round. There are so many pieces that you may think are just for one season, but there are ways to translate them for other seasons.
However if you don’t have the space or if you don’t connect to this idea, then I recommend putting your clothing for other seasons elsewhere. Under the bed is a great place to store things especially if you don’t have a lot of room.
12. Hang Everything Up.
Everything that’s left in your closet after going through the first 11 tips on this list, should be folded or hung up. Display your remaining wardrobe in a way that makes you feel good when you look at your closet.
Create an organized closet where it’s easy to find things and get dressed. Most of us go to our closet everyday, so make it as efficient as possible no matter what size your space is.
