9 Closet Organization Tips
1. Use the same hangers.
The first thing you want to do is make sure all of your clothes are on the same type of hanger. I recommend wooden hangers, but it’s more important that all of your hangers are uniform. Having the same style and color of hangers in your closet will immediately elevate your closet.
2. No dry cleaning bags or wire hangers.
Try to avoid leaving your garments on dry cleaning hangers. Over time, the wire of dry cleaning hangers will make holes in your clothes. Also, avoid keeping your clothes in dry cleaning bags as over time it can break down the material of your clothing. If you have items that you want to protect in garment bags, I recommend ones that are translucent and allow you to see your clothing.
3. Face your hangers in the same direction.
When your hangers are facing the same way, all of your clothes are facing forward for easy access. It is also going to make it easy to pull items out to get dressed in the morning.
4. Group your empty hangers together.
Put all of your empty hangers in the front or the back of your clothes so you don’t have to go searching for empty hangers. You want to be able to hang your clothes easily at the end of the day. Having empty hangers in the same spot will help you avoid throwing your clothes on the floor.
5. Group your items together in sections.
Have all of your tops, bottoms, outerwear, and dresses in their own individual sections. I like to put all of my tops in the front since I’m typically needing one of those every day. Organize all of your bottoms together. Have your outer layers like your cardigans, blazers, and jackets together.
6. Organize each section.
Once you finish grouping each section by item then you’re going to organize each section. Have your tops go from casual to dressy. Then for each “subsection” (casual tops and dressy tops), organize from short sleeve to long sleeve. Next, categorize each of these subsections (casual short sleeve tops, casual long sleeve tops…) by light to dark colors. Also, make sure your clothes are not inside out.
7. Avoid hanging multiple items on one hanger.
Another issue preventing your closet from being organized and staying that way, is when you hang more than one item on a hanger. If you want one of the items hanging on the same hanger and your rushing out the door, chances are you’re just going to throw the other item on the floor. Each item should have its own hanger that is easily accessible.
8. Separate your cocktail dresses.
Your cocktail dresses are not what you’re going to reach for every day. In general, I recommend putting these in a less accessible area of your closet. What you wear for your everyday life should be front and center in your closet.
9. Have a sentimental storage solution.
It’s okay to have one box for all of the sentimental items that you don’t wear but want to hold onto because they are meaningful. These pieces should not be hanging in your closet with the clothing you actually do wear. If that sentimental box no longer has room for new pieces, it’s time to let some of the pieces that aren’t as sentimental go.
Once you follow these steps, it will feel so much better to have an organized closet where you can see what you have. You’ll know where to look if you need a casual top or a dressy one. Everything is organized and on the same hanger. Having an organized closet makes it so much easier to find the items you’re looking for when you’re getting dressed.
