9 Tips For When You Have Nothing To Wear
Why You’ll Always Struggle With Your Style Until You Do This l Video
9 Tips For When You Have Nothing To Wear
1. Invest In Quality Basics
It took me years of frustration to realize the importance of investing in quality basics. I used to think basics and capsule wardrobes were boring and wouldn’t make me feel confident or stylish. But once I started investing in foundational pieces I could mix and match, my wardrobe became more cohesive, and I finally felt good with my style. Without basics, it’s hard to style other pieces because they’re the foundation of your wardrobe. Until you commit to investing in high-quality basics over trendy statement pieces, you’ll likely continue to struggle.
2. Pay Attention To What You Like
When you shop, whether in-store or online, are you paying attention to what you truly like? Here’s a simple exercise I share with my clients: pick your three favorite items from your closet, pull them out, and examine what makes them your favorites. Is it the color, style, fabric, fit, or a unique detail? Once you’re clear on the qualities that make these pieces special, write them down.
When shopping, use these criteria. If a new item doesn’t meet at least three of them, don’t buy it. Often, we convince ourselves a piece is right just because of one factor, like color or a small detail, but one quality usually isn’t enough to make it something you’ll wear and love for a long time. By focusing on what you genuinely love, you’ll make fewer shopping mistakes and curate a wardrobe full of pieces you enjoy wearing.
3. Go Inward
The next step is to go inward. When shopping or styling pieces you already own, take time to listen to how you truly feel. Many of us rush through shopping without considering why we’re doing it or how we feel in the moment. Often, we shop out of boredom, frustration, or to fill a void, rather than to find pieces we genuinely love which leads to a closet of clothes we don’t wear.
Our emotions play a significant role in the clothes we choose and how we feel about them. If you want to feel confident in your wardrobe, pay attention to your mindset when shopping. If you’re not shopping with a clear intention, like following a list of items you’re excited to add to your closet, then it might not be the right time to shop. Instead, it might be more helpful to take a walk, read a book, or talk to a friend. Shopping to avoid feelings leads to buying things we don’t need or love.
4. Know Your Personal Style
In my 20s, I had no idea what my personal style was. I didn’t know what I was drawn to, what felt authentic, or even what made me feel good. That’s why my next recommendation is to know your personal style. Once you understand your style, you’ll make better choices and find pieces that resonate with you and feel true to who you are.
With a clear sense of your personal style, you’ll have more inspiration and ideas when putting outfits together. Our style can evolve in different phases of our lives. It’s about knowing what you enjoy wearing and what feels authentic.

5. Stop Buying “Deals”
This is a key factor in ending the struggle with your wardrobe. If you’re buying pieces because they’re on sale or seem like a great deal, you’ll likely end up with nothing to wear. While spending $20 on a piece may seem like nothing at the time, if you buy five of those “cheap” pieces, that’s $100 you could’ve spent on one quality item you truly love. To build a versatile wardrobe that’s easy to style, avoid fast fashion and impulse purchases. If the main reason you’re buying something is because of the price tag, don’t do it.
I’ve seen many closets stuffed with clothes, but clients only love a few pieces and the rest are just “okay.” Often, those unused items are poor quality, poor construction, and fabrics that don’t last. These pieces take up space and aren’t worn. If you want to stop struggling with your wardrobe, skip fast fashion and avoid buying “deals.” When considering a $20 sale item, ask yourself: Would you buy it if it were three times the price? If not, don’t add it to your closet.
6. Look For Neutral Colored Pieces
Having quality, solid neutral-colored pieces in your closet is essential for making it easy to get dressed and put together outfits. Neutrals like ivory, cream, white, black, gray, navy, camel, beige, oatmeal, and blush offer a wide range of options. Find the neutral tones that you enjoy and feel good in. Also, invest in classic styles that will form the foundation of your wardrobe.
When I work with clients who struggle to create outfits, I often find they lack solid neutral pieces. Their closets are full of prints, bright colors, or statement items, but they don’t have those anchoring basics that make putting outfits together easier. Once you have these neutral basics, you’ll be able to mix and match effortlessly, creating countless options. Consider the neutral colors that suit you best and incorporate them into your wardrobe. Don’t rely solely on prints because neutral pieces will give you more versatility and simplify your styling.
7. Limit Statement Pieces
If you struggle with putting outfits together, take a look through your closet and check how many statement pieces you own. Statement pieces are those with prints, bright colors, ruffles, or other standout details. While it’s great if you love these items, having only statement pieces can make it difficult to mix and match your wardrobe.
Statement pieces should be a small portion of your closet because they don’t work well when paired with other statement items. If your wardrobe is full of colors, prints, and bold designs, it will be hard to create versatile outfits. Statement pieces are meant to stand out, so style them with neutral, solid basics.
For example, choose one statement item, then balance it with neutral basics to create a cohesive outfit. Wearing multiple statement pieces together can be overwhelming, so keeping most of your wardrobe simple and neutral will make it much easier to create outfits that work.
8. Declutter And Edit Your Closet
You’ll continue to struggle with your wardrobe until you take the time to declutter and edit your closet. This requires a commitment to go through your clothes and remove anything you’re not wearing or that doesn’t make you feel good. Those pieces are taking up space, and they won’t magically become favorites one day. They’ve likely been sitting there unworn for a reason.
Anything you don’t love, feel confident in, or regularly wear doesn’t belong in your closet. Once you’ve decluttered, it’s much easier to see what you actually have, what you wear, and the gaps in your wardrobe.

9. Have A Shopping List
What are the pieces making it hard for you to get dressed every day? Identifying what’s missing is key, which is why having a shopping list is valuable. By creating a shopping list and prioritizing those essential items, the process of getting dressed becomes more efficient. You’ll build a wardrobe full of clothes you’re excited to wear.
In my 20s, I didn’t know what I was missing to create cohesive, put-together outfits. I had no idea what a capsule wardrobe or foundation pieces were. This capsule wardrobe checklist helps you figure out what foundational pieces you might need. However, not every piece on a typical capsule wardrobe list will be right for everyone. It’s important to tweak these lists to fit your personal style.
