Find Your Style
When it comes to minimalist fashion, certain elements define this personal style type. Someone who enjoys minimalist style prefers neutral solid colors and simple designs and silhouettes. In a minimalist clothing type, there’s more focus on comfort and effortless style.
Knowing what your style is will save you money, time, and frustration. You’ll know the items that you want to be shopping for.
For most of us, your personal style will change. Many of us will not have the same personal style in our 20’s, 30’s, 40’s and beyond. Most of us also don’t fit into one personal style type, so you might have several of these style types that feel authentic for you.
One of the easiest ways to figure out what your style is is to look at your closet and pick three or four of the items that you feel great in. Each piece’s identifying qualities fit into a personal style type that will help you figure out what your style is.
I’m going to be sharing different celebrities that fit the minimalist fashion style type and what makes their look fall into this personal style.

Look 1: Gwyneth Paltrow
The first minimalist style icon I think of is Gwyneth Paltrow. In this first look, she’s wearing a black blazer with a white button-up white shirt. While we see blazers throughout several personal style types, the difference here is the fit of her blazer. Here, the blazer is more relaxed, oversized, and longer. A preppy-style blazer will typically be more fitted and classic. She’s also wearing it with a pair of black slim-ankle pants and white sneakers. A preppy style might be wearing a similar look with a ballet flat instead of trainers. The sneaker is a simple white chic sneaker that makes this look feel effortless. This look is polished but also comfortable. The colors are minimal and the design and silhouette are simple.
Look 2: Gwyneth Paltrow
In this next look, she’s wearing a simple white tank with a pair of straight-leg jeans and a white slip-on sneaker. She’s done a full tuck of her tank which can feel preppy, but her jeans are not fitted as we tend to see in the preppy style type. Her jeans are a comfortable and relaxed fit. She’s a simple white pair of slip-on shoes with a cream sweater tied over her shoulders. While there are preppy elements in this outfit, in general, this look feels minimal.
Look 3: Gwyneth Paltrow
In this next look, she’s also wearing mostly white with an olive green utility jacket. Her pants are a looser fit, but they don’t fit into a trendy style type. This outfit is about comfort and effortless style. The pants are probably a cotton fabric and she’s wearing it with a pair of simple white sneakers. Her jacket is not a stiff fabric like a leather jacket that we’d see in the edgy style type. Instead, it’s more of a relaxed cotton canvas jacket that feels effortless. There are no embellishments or prints. It’s a very minimal look.
Look 1: Angelina Jolie
Another celebrity style icon I think of with minimalist fashion style is Angelina Jolie. She also brings in some classic elements to her style, but as a whole her style resonates more towards minimal. In this first look, she’s wearing a relaxed trouser. They’re not very structured like we’d see in the classic style type. Instead, her trousers look like they are made of a softer fabric. She’s styled these pants with a simple gray sweater.
A preppy style type might add a collared button-up shirt underneath the sweater and wear ballet flats. An edgy style type might wear a pair of black faux leather leggings and a black leather jacket. You can see how some of these pieces would work across different styles, but it’s the way the pieces are styled, the silhouettes, and the fabric choices that make them fit into a certain style type.
Look 2: Angelina Jolie
This next look is a more dressed-up minimalist fashion outfit. She is wearing head-to-toe camel in this monochromatic look. Overall, this look is a simple silhouette with not much going on. The skirt is fluid but it’s not a boho skirt that’s down to the ground with florals. It’s a streamlined skirt paired with a simple top and a camel coat to complete her look. There’s nothing overstated about this look. The minimalist fashion style typically doesn’t wear statement pieces.
Look 3: Angelina Jolie
Again, this look feels slightly classic. However, it also feels minimal because it’s simple. The pants look like they are a comfortable fabric and fit. She’s not wearing any jewelry that we can see, and her other accessories are simple. A minimalist style type won’t be drawn to wearing belts, big jewelry, or statement pieces.
Look 1: Cate Blanchett
Cate Blanchett is another celebrity style icon that fits into a minimalist fashion style. Here she’s wearing a white button-up shirt but it’s in a relaxed cotton fabric. It’s not a stiff cotton like you might see in the preppy style or a silk fabric like you would see in the classic style. Although her pants are pleated like we would see in the trendy style, they fit into a minimalist style because they’re a neutral color in a relaxed fit and comfortable fabric. There are only three colors to this look. She has a simple black crossbody bag and sunglasses, and she’s wearing a watch but not much else in terms of accessories.
