What Is Boho Style?

Modern bohemian style is an easy relaxed chic style. It’s the Coachella Vibes: floppy hats, long flowy skirts, and fringe on everything. These are some of the characteristics that I think of when it comes to modern bohemian style.

If you are figuring out what your personal style is, think about what elements are in your clothes. Do they have these modern bohemian style elements, or do they not? Figuring out what your style is is helpful because it becomes easier to know what to shop for because you’ll know what you’ll actually wear. If you know what your style is, you can look at the item and make shopping decisions more easily.

One of the modern bohemian style icons is Vanessa Hudgens. This first look is a quintessential modern bohemian style outfit. She’s wearing a long flowy skirt with a floral print and a floppy hat. Vanessa also has on a long leather necklace which is one of the things that defines modern bohemian style. The leather is not like an edgy style that’s typically more structured and black but instead is in a brown tone. Additionally, it feels worn in and earthy. Lastly, she pairs it with round sunglasses that fit into the boho type perfectly.

Look 2: Vanessa Hudgins

In this next photo, her bag has fringe on it. She’s wearing gladiator sandals that lace up, and both are boho-style elements. If you have pieces like this in your closet that you love to wear, then you might identify with a modern bohemian style. Most of us don’t fit into one personal style type. We will have two or three types that we intermix and change, but we are drawn usually to two or three style types.

Look 3: Vanessa Hudgins

Here in this next look, she has on a long camel-colored cardigan. This look feels boho because the colors are earth tones. For example, her shirt is an orangey rust color. Also, her jeans are not a skinny fit or a mom fit. Instead, they’re a wide-leg style that works with this clothing style.

Look 1: Nicole Richie

Another boho-style icon is Nicole Richie. She’s wearing a long cardigan with a simple pattern in earth tones. The modern bohemian style does enjoy patterns in earth tones. They’re not pattern averse like the minimal style type or the classic style. While her jeans are not wide-leg jeans like in the previous photo of Vanessa Hudgens, her jeans are distressed, relaxed, and intentional.

Look 2: Nicole Richie

Here in this next look of Nicole Richie, she’s wearing layers of necklaces. There are long necklaces with many different styles like metal and stones which feel bohemian. She’s done a half tuck here but her jeans are relaxed. Finally, she’s wearing a pair of Converse to complete this look.

Look 1: Kate Bosworth

In this next look, we have Kate Bosworth. Here she has a boho-style hat, cut-off denim shorts, and suede ankle booties. Although the booties are black-like we might see more in an edgy style type, the choice of suede over smooth leather helps to soften her look. Someone with a bohemian style tends to wear suede and softer leather with less structure. Additionally, she balances the black with a yellow slightly oversized top that feels boho and California chic.

Look 2: Kate Bosworth

For this next look, Kate Bosworth has on a pair of suede ankle booties. These are likely Isabel Marant who is a designer with a boho aesthetic. Also, her sweater is not a fitted sweater or a solid-colored sweater like you’d see in a classic style. This is a relaxed easy casual boho look because it has earthy tones, light-washed denim, and it’s a little bit oversized.

Look 3: Kate Bosworth

In this next look, her bag has fringe on it which we see in bohemian style. She’s wearing round sunglasses and has a relaxed light-colored denim dress. Instead of ankle booties, her boots are suede knee boots in an earthy rust color which goes with this style type.

Your style can change as you go through different seasons of your life because most of us are not going to have one personal style from when we’re 20 years old to 70 years old.

Another boho-style icon I think of is Alessandra Ambrosio. Although her style has evolved over the years, she still tends to go back to elements of boho style. In this first look, she’s wearing a long skirt with a light-wash denim or chambray shirt. She’s done a little tie in the front which feels bohemian as well. She’s wearing several necklaces in different lengths. Again, this feels California chic and modern boho.

Look 2: Alessandra Ambrosio

Here she was at Coachella a few years ago. Coachella feels like boho style to the max. She’s wearing a floppy hat, has a tan suede bag with fringe, and a wide brown leather belt that feels earthy. Alessandra’s wearing brown ankle booties and a white peasant top that feels boho.

Look 4: Vanessa Hudgins

Lastly, here is Vanessa Hudgens at Coachella. She’s wearing a crochet halter top with flowers on it. Crochet flowers are something you tend to see in the bohemian style type. She’s wearing cut-off denim shorts in a light wash, and layered necklaces, and completed this look with a fringed leather bag.

Every personal style type has its version of casual to dressy so Bohemian is not only dressy or only casual. For example, a dressy Bohemian style will have more of a flowy dress while a casual look may be a wide leg jean with a peasant top. It’s about bringing in the elements of each style to make it feel Bohemian or a different style type.
