5 Style Upgrades For A Polished Look
1. Wear A Layer

Layers are essential when putting together an outfit, especially if you live somewhere with fluctuating temperatures. Beyond functionality, layering can completely change the look and feel of an outfit by adding depth, texture, and structure.
Some great layering pieces include cardigans, blazers, and wool coats. Cardigans can range from structured knits to more relaxed cashmere, wool, or cotton styles. Blazers, whether tailored or oversized, instantly elevate an outfit. A structured blazer refines a flowy dress or top, while an oversized blazer pairs well with fitted pieces to balance proportions. A classic wool coat is another game-changer for elevating an outfit.
Layering not only enhances an outfit but also helps define your shape when wearing something flowy or billowy. Adding a structured layer can make the outfit feel more intentional and balanced. A great way to refine your wardrobe is to assess the layering pieces you already own and see which ones make you feel good. Experimenting with different layers can transform an outfit with minimal effort, making it easier to create polished stylish looks.
2. Add Jewelry

Another easy way to elevate your style is to wear earrings, a necklace, or a bracelet. Accessories are simple to add polish to any outfit.
3. Change Your Shoes

Changing your shoes is a simple way to upgrade your outfit. When putting together your look for the day, consider what you’ll be doing and where you’re going. If you’ll be walking all day, you’ll want something comfortable and functional, but your shoes should also help complete your outfit. Taking the time to look at your shoe collection and identify which ones make your outfits feel more put together can elevate your style.
I love a chic pair of sneakers because they’re perfect with jeans and a tee or even a dress for a comfortable yet stylish look. But I also love swapping them out for ankle booties, and for the evening, I’ll opt for heels or heeled boots to instantly change the outfit’s vibe. When I want to elevate a look while staying comfortable, I’ll reach for my over-the-knee boots. They’re flat, so they’re practical for all-day wear, yet they add a stylish upgrade.
4. Steam Your Clothes

Steaming your clothes is an easy way to upgrade your outfits. Wearing a wrinkled top, skirt, or pants can make you look sloppy instead of polished and put-together. Steaming your clothes can completely change how polished your overall look appears. I always recommend setting aside time once a week to steam your clothes so that everything hanging in your closet is 100% ready to wear. If you leave wrinkled clothes unsteamed, you might either wear them anyway or skip them entirely, leading to unnecessary stress when getting dressed.
Choose a time that works for you, whether it’s 15 minutes a week or once a month, to steam the pieces that need it and hang them back in your closet. This simple habit will completely transform your outfits, making a huge difference in both how you look and how you feel.
5. Do A Tuck

Doing a tuck can completely change the look of an outfit. This is especially helpful with oversized tops. When something is boxy, long, or oversized, tucking it in helps define your waist, improve proportions, and create a more polished, put-together look. I do this about 90% of the time when styling a top with pants or a skirt because it instantly elevates an outfit.
If a shirt is too long, it can elongate your torso and shorten your legs. Unless that’s the style you’re going for, a tuck can help balance proportions and add waist definition. A French tuck is a great option if you want a structured yet effortless look. However, you don’t always need to tuck. For example, when a top already hits at the right length, has a finished hem like an elastic band, or features detailing meant to be seen, like lace. Fitted tops and cropped styles also don’t require tucking.
For an easy half-tuck measure about 1.5 to 2 inches from the hemline, then tuck that section of your top into your waistband. Smooth out the sides to prevent bunching, and gently pull the front of the top slightly for a natural drape. The rise of your bottoms also plays a role. Higher-waisted jeans may require less tucking. Play around with different styles to see what feels right for you. Small styling tweaks can make a big difference, so have fun finding what works best for you!
