We’re focusing on what makes a preppy style in today’s post. I’m going to share the celebrities who embody preppy style and the elements that make up this style type. Most of us don’t fall into one personal style category, but we might be several. Knowing what style you feel most drawn to and the clothes that you feel great in will allow you to make purchases based on your style.
When I think of preppy style, I often think of a crisp blazer, nautical stripes, or a button-up shirt underneath a crew neck sweater. The style is more streamlined and polished. There are usually simple details and you don’t see exaggerated silhouettes. They’re clean lines, but there is a specific style aesthetic.

Preppy Style
Look 1: Reese Witherspoon
One of the people that I think of most with preppy style is Reese Witherspoon. In this first look, she’s done a full tuck of her top into her jeans. When it’s a casual look with jeans, this is more of a preppy look because the shirt is buttoned up to the collar.
This is a preppy look because the buttons aren’t undone, and her jeans are a medium blue wash and they’re not distressed or oversized. They’re skinny jeans, and she’s wearing them with a classic pair of red pumps. There’s that matching element with the top and the shoes which feels preppy and polished.
Look 2: Reese Witherspoon
Although this next look is mostly black, she’s styled these pieces preppy. Her sweater is tucked into her jeans, she’s wearing a button-up collar shirt underneath her sweater, and she’s wearing a pair of loafers. They’re not heavier masculine loafers like we might see in the androgynous style type. They feel preppy because they’re a clean-lined simple loafer. Again, her jeans here are more of a skinny-leg.
Look 3: Reese Witherspoon
In this next look, she’s wearing a fitted black blazer. While this exact blazer could work with a classic style, she styles it in a preppy way. Her shirt is fully tucked into her jeans, and she pairs it with a clean-lined black leather belt. She does have this chunky necklace on which could fit into an edgy style type, but because of the other styling details, it feels more preppy. Each personal style type can have casual and dressy looks. What makes a style preppy are the qualities of preppy fashion.
Look 4: Reese Witherspoon
For this next outfit, she’s wearing a casual look. She hasn’t done her full tuck and she’s wearing a relaxed denim shirt. She has the sleeves rolled up and a tank top underneath to make it more casual. Also, her jeans are slim with a cuff at the bottom still creating a very intentional, polished look.
Look 5: Reese Witherspoon
In this next look, she’s wearing a collared button-up shirt underneath her crew neck sweater. Although she hasn’t tucked in her sweater, it’s still fitted at the bottom. It has a streamlined silhouette, and her jeans are a skinny dark blue wash. She’s wearing a simple necklace to complete this look.
Look 6: Reese Witherspoon
Here, Reese is wearing another button-up shirt in a gingham print. She’s done a French or half tuck to accentuate her waist. Additionally, she’s wearing a simple leather belt with the same wash of jeans that we’ve seen before.
Look 1: Meghan Markle
Another preppy style icon is Meghan Markle. Here she’s wearing the standard white button-up classic cotton shirt with the sleeves rolled up and tucked in. Although her jeans are slightly distressed, they still are that medium blue wash we see a lot with this style type.
Look 2: Meghan Markle
In this next look, she’s doing denim on denim in a preppy way. Her shirt is tucked into her dark blue wash skinny jeans and she’s wearing ballet flats. Someone with Bohemian style might also wear denim on denim, but they’ll choose a lighter wash, leave their shirt partially untucked, and pair it with ankle booties instead.
Look 3: Meghan Markle
Another preppy piece is a classic denim jean jacket. Here, Megan is wearing a denim jacket with a white button-up shirt. She tucks her shirt into her fitted jeans, and although they’re black, they still fit into a preppy style because of the fit. Additionally, she has a preppy-style loafer on.
Look 1: Cindy Crawford
Here is a look from Cindy Crawford that fits into the preppy style type. Here she is wearing nautical stripes. Nautical stripes are a common style you tend to see when it comes to preppy clothing. She has on a classic fitted blazer in a camel color which could also fall into a classic style type if it was styled differently. Her jeans again are that dark skinny wash, and she’s finishing off this look with a pair of ballet flats which we see a lot in this clothing type.
Look 1: Emma Stone
In this next look, we have Emma Stone. She has a button-up collared shirt underneath a crew neck sweater. Her sweater is navy which is one of the colors we see a lot in this personal style type. Additionally, she’s wearing dark blue wash skinny jeans and ballet flats.
Look 2: Emma Stone
In this last look for Emma Stone, she’s wearing a nautical striped sweater. She’s styled it with skinny jeans and a pair of ballet flats. Her jacket might be leather, but it doesn’t feel like a moto jacket like you would see in an edgy style type. The leather jacket doesn’t have too many embellishments and because it is a softer leather styled this way it feels more preppy.
Each of the 9 most common clothing styles may have similar capsule wardrobe essentials. The difference is the way they style these staples, the silhouettes, and the fabric choices.
