The 10 Closet Essentials Women Need For Fall
Hi Friends- Today’s post and “How To Style Tip” video answers the question, “What Is In A Capsule Wardrobe | Fall Essentials”. According to Grace Schweizer from The Penny Hoarder, “Your capsule wardrobe should consist of only clothing you like and that you like on your body, and should generally coordinate enough in color and style that you can mix and match frequently”. “A capsule wardrobe is a collection of classic and essential items that don’t go out of style”, writes Bola Sokunbi of Clever Girl Finance.
Having most of your clothes in neutral colors will make them interchangeable and easy to mix and match. “Keep in mind that when you’re shopping for your capsule wardrobe you want to focus on neutral colors. A color scheme is key to a cohesive wardrobe” writes Carolyn Arentson of My Chic Obsession. Neutral colors include black, taupe, gray, camel, navy, beige, blush, and ivory.
The reasons for a capsule wardrobe are plenty. It saves you time and money, prevents decision fatigue, and helps you avoid fast fashion. The end goal of a capsule wardrobe is to always feel like you have something great to wear no matter the occasion or the weather, and that every item hanging in your closet is something you love.

What Is In A Capsule Wardrobe For Fall?
1. CARDIGANS.
I definitely recommend having a black and neutral cardigan in gray or ivory. You’ll get so much use out of them no matter which climate you live in. A good cardigan is an essential wardrobe piece that works for every season. One that is an open style and hits just below the hip can be worn many ways and is my pick for a good foundational piece in your wardrobe.
2. A LIGHTWEIGHT SWEATER.
I suggest opting for a sweater that is lightweight and can transition between seasons. A neutral knit can be styled under a blazer and worn with faux leather leggings. It’s one of the most versatile fall wardrobe pieces.
One of the key things about an essential item is that it’s versatile. Staple pieces in your closet should be things you can easily style and wear for multiple seasons.
3. FAUX LEATHER LEGGINGS.
If faux leather leggings feel a bit too edgy for you, you can make this item in your fall capsule wardrobe be a dressy black legging instead. Black elevated leggings can be worn in so many ways. You can style them with a pair of flat boots and an oversized sweater for daytime. For an evening out, you can wear them with a silk blouse that’s slightly longer and a pair of heels.
4. A KNIT OR SWEATER DRESS.
The knit dress is a must-have closet essential. There are so many options for sweater dresses available. Some are lighter-weight knits or ribbed. Others are sleeveless so they can work for warmer fall days. A good sweater dress can be styled with ankle boots for a casual fun vibe. You can dress it up or dress it down. I also love styling mine with sneakers.
5. THE CLASSIC BLACK BLAZER.
A classic black blazer easily goes from day to night. You want to make sure it has structure but isn’t just for the office. Details like single button tailored fit, and non-ruched sleeves are some of the things to look for that will make a blazer timeless. The classic black blazer it’s definitely a must-have for the fall and all year.
Oversized blazers are a big trend right now. I think they can work for some body types, but I would start with making sure you have a classic black blazer in place first. That’s the style that should be an investment because you’ll be able to wear it for years.
6. A GREAT LEATHER JACKET.
Having a leather jacket for fall that you love, is worth the investment. If you’re not into leather jackets, a denim jacket is a good alternative. You can style either one over dresses with boots or sandals. When it gets cooler, you can wear it with a sweater and leggings. Either type of jacket is a must-have piece for fall.
7. MEDIUM TO DARK BLUE WASH JEANS.
My next fall wardrobe essential is an all year round staple item, the jean. The key to your capsule wardrobe jean is that it’s denim in a medium to dark blue wash, one that you love the fit of and that you can wear from day to night. A medium to dark blue wash works for every season and is business casual appropriate. Skip holes or rips for your capsule denim though since you’ll have limitations on where you can wear them.
8. AN ELEVATED WHITE T-SHIRT.
The eighth wardrobe essential I recommend for fall is another item you should have all year round in your closet, an elevated white t-shirt. I recommend a v-neck if you are petite and a crewneck if you are busty. A great white tee can be styled endlessly and that’s why it’s such a great wardrobe staple.
9. SILK LONG SLEEVE BLOUSE.
Silk or silk-like long sleeve blouse in any color that you feel great in is another fall staple. You want one that is dressier than a cotton blouse. Long sleeves make it more versatile for the seasons. The classic long sleeve blouse can be worn with jeans, elevated leggings, or tucked into a skirt.
10. ANKLE BOOTS.
A low heel or flat ankle boot is the next item I suggest for a fall capsule wardrobe. You want a pair that is comfortable and that you can wear from day to night. Ankle boots can be styled with dresses, jeans, leggings, and even shorts on warmer fall days.
To learn all the closet essentials I recommend having year round for an ultimate capsule wardrobe, I created a free capsule wardrobe checklist. This is a guide that you can print out, bring into your closet, check off the items you have, and create a shopping list for the items you need.
You’ll actually have less with a capsule wardrobe, but so many more options for what to wear.
