6 Steps To Find Your Personal Style
1. Find People In The Public Eye Whose Style You Love.
Start by finding a celebrity or someone in the public eye whose style you really like. Ideally, look for someone that has similar coloring to you and a similar body shape. This will help you start to identify what elements you like and see which of those elements will also work for you.
2. Create A Mood Board.
Look on Pinterest, Instagram, or another social platform for style inspiration. Begin to save those images that you’re loving. Put these images into a mood board. It could be an album on your phone, a file on your computer, or make a board on Pinterest.
At this stage, you don’t need to know why you’re drawn to these looks but just start collecting outfits that you love. Once you’ve saved a bunch of images, look through them look and see what adjectives describe the style of the outfits. Are they feminine, classic, preppy, boho, etc.
Write those adjectives down and see which ones arise over and over.
3. Look In Your Own Closet For Inspiration.
What items do you absolutely love in your closet? They’re your go-to’s. You put them on and you feel great. Pull these pieces out of your closet.
What elements describe these pieces? Are they classic, edgy, sporty, etc? Again what are the adjectives that keep coming up again and again and again in these pieces?
4. What Color(s) Do You Feel Best In?
The next thing you want to think about is, what colors do you feel more confident in? Do you like wearing colors, or do you like wearing neutrals?
What about prints? Do you like wearing patterns or certain prints? Think about what you gravitate more towards wearing. You can go through those pieces in your closet that you love from step 3, and see what colors they are or what prints they have.
While there are many resources that help you find the colors that look good on your skin tone, instead of focusing on those I want you to think more about the colors that you feel good in. When you put this color on you feel happy and confident. Try to focus more on that than the colors that are “right for you”.
5. What Silhouette Do You Love To Wear?
Pay attention to the fit you feel best in. What silhouette(s) do you like? Do you like when clothes are looser, or more fitted? If you’re stuck here, go back to your mood board and look at those images. Start to which silhouette(s) patterns come up over and over.
6. Define Your Overall Style Elements.
Start thinking about the overall adjectives that kept coming up in steps 1-5. Your fashion style does not need to fit into just 1 style of clothing. I personally have three elements I use to define my personal style.
I define my fashion style as classic, edgy, and feminine. Begin to pay attention to what clothing styles you like. That will help you define your personal style.
It’s important to remember that your style can change over time and through different phases of your life. Knowing your style of clothing will help you make better shopping decisions and less fashion mistakes.
If finding your personal style is important to you take the time and make the effort to pay attention and answer the question, “What’s my fashion style”?
